Available: August 2026                                                            Assignment: August - December
Job Summary and Scope of Responsibility:We have an opening for a warm educator who will serve as a Long-term Substitute for middle school mathematics and science. The ideal candidate will be an experienced math and science educator who loves working with middle school students, has strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral), is a collaborative team player, and is comfortable integrating math with technology, science, and other subjects when possible. This will also include advisory responsibilities to help further support students. Candidates must be comfortable teaching in-person math and science, but also be able to shift to virtual teaching if ever necessary.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Classroom Responsibilities
  • Carry out curriculum in core content areas of math and science
  • Create and maintain a classroom community that fosters a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Create and maintain a climate of respect and kindness for all students.
  • Observe and assess student performance.
  • Partner with families on behalf of their children, and communicate regularly about classroom happenings and student progress.
  • Support and contribute to curriculum development to enhance the program.
  • Work collaboratively within Student Services and across the school, and maintain a caseload to support students in need of curricular support and interventions
  • Supporting students in the areas of literacy, math, and executive functioning
  • Partner with teachers to support differentiated instruction to meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles
  • Exhibit patience and a sense of humor.

Advisor Responsibilities
  • Work with a small group (usually 6-7) of students during morning Advisor or Gibush time, weekly Tefillah, and weekly Student Consultancy.
  • Provide support for each Advisee in all aspects of daily life at the Bernard Zell Middle School.
  • Nurture student well-being within a healthy, non-judgmental, caring teacher-student relationship while modeling high expectations and advocating for student needs.
  • Monitor workloads to support student achievement
  • Manage a welcoming Gibush
  • Serve as the primary communication link among faculty, students, and families
Other Responsibilities
  • Lunch and recess supervision duties
  • Accompanying Advisees to weekly Tefillah services
  • Chaperoning field trips
  • Maintain a warm and welcoming classroom environment
  • Must attend regularly scheduled meetings during the day and a mandatory weekly after-school faculty meeting.
  • All other duties as assigned to support the school.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred

Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years of classroom teaching experience required
  • Experience providing a nurturing, creative, and inclusive environment for students and creating a strong classroom community.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must be able to work onsite
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and administration to support the objectives of the curriculum.
  • Ability to cultivate creative problem-solving and critical thinking in students.
  • Ability to embrace technology and new ways of extending student learning and creative capacities.
  • Knowledge of interactive whiteboard technology, iPads, and Chromebooks.
  • Appreciation of a diverse, pluralistic Jewish community.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Compensation: Bernard Zell offers competitive compensation, excellent benefits, and a supportive workplace culture. This is an hourly position, and the rate of pay is $195 per day.
