OverviewThe Police Sergeant supervises personnel of equal or lesser rank, performing varied and detailed duties in planning, assigning, and directing the activities of subordinates in Patrol and the Communications Center. The Sergeant monitors and evaluates the performance of subordinates and provides written documentation meeting the requirements of Babson College’s formal evaluation process. The Sergeant may be assigned as a shift patrol supervisor or to any special assignments.
Generally working under the supervision of the Assistant Director/Patrol Lieutenant, a Sergeant shall have immediate control of the personnel under their command and shall be held strictly accountable for their efficiency, effectiveness, discipline, appearance, and overall conduct to ensure appropriate enforcement and compliance with the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the policies, procedures, and regulations of Babson College, consistent with the interests of protecting the lives and property of the members of the Babson College community. In absence of any superior officer, the Sergeant shall assume complete charge of the department until otherwise relieved by a higher authorit
This is a non-exempt position with a starting hourly rate of $45.77 effective 7/1/26. The role is also eligible for bonuses based on performance and budget.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Appointees to the Police Sergeant of Public Safety position must successfully complete a one-year probationary period. Permanent and continuing appointment is contingent upon successful completion of such training programs as designated by the Chief of Police or their designee.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Appointees must be in good mental and physical condition, and are subject to psychological evaluations and drug testing, and fitness for duty examinations as may from time to time be prescribed by the Chief of Police or their designee.
LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
The Police Sergeant of Public Safety must obtain and retain authority as a special state police officer in accordance with Massachusetts General Law c. 22c sec. 63. This position must meet the educational and training academy requirements in order to be certified as a Special State Police Officer as well as POST certification MGL 555 CMR 1.0 This position must meet all the requirements of becoming a Special Police Officer in the Town of Wellesley and Needham. Retention of valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, Massachusetts Firearm License to Carry Class A is required.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), who by virtue of their College responsibilities and under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, is an individual to which students and employees should report criminal offenses. A CSA shall forward all reports in accordance with the College’s reporting structure so they may be assessed for timely warning, inclusion in the daily crime log and inclusion in annual statistical disclosures.
