What is a virtual high school counselor?

Virtual high school counselors are licensed professionals who provide academic, career, and personal guidance to students enrolled in online or remote high school programs. They help students with course selection, college planning, social-emotional support, and resolving academic or personal challenges. Virtual counselors use email, video calls, chat, and other digital tools to communicate with students and collaborate with parents and teachers. Their role is similar to traditional counselors but adapted for the unique needs and opportunities of online learning environments.

How does a virtual high school counselor support students' academic and emotional needs in an online environment?

Virtual High School Counselors use a variety of digital tools and communication platforms to connect with students individually and in groups. They provide academic advising, college and career planning, and offer social-emotional support through video calls, emails, and online workshops. Building strong relationships can be challenging without face-to-face interaction, so counselors must be proactive in outreach and creative in engagement strategies. Collaboration with teachers, parents, and administrators is essential to monitor student progress and address concerns promptly. Counselors also participate in virtual team meetings and contribute to developing school-wide support programs tailored for remote learners.
