What is a virtual financial controller?

A Virtual Financial Controller is a finance professional who manages a company’s accounting, financial reporting, and strategic financial planning remotely, often on a part-time or contract basis. They oversee budgeting, cash flow management, compliance, and provide guidance on financial decisions, similar to an in-house controller but working virtually. This role is especially beneficial for small to medium-sized businesses that need expert financial oversight without hiring a full-time executive. Virtual Financial Controllers leverage cloud-based accounting systems and communication tools to collaborate efficiently with clients.

How does a virtual financial controller typically collaborate with remote teams and clients?

A Virtual Financial Controller frequently works with geographically dispersed teams and clients, often using cloud-based accounting software and virtual meeting platforms to maintain clear communication. Regular check-ins, status updates, and collaborative financial reviews ensure alignment on budgets, forecasts, and key business decisions. Effective use of digital tools is crucial for sharing documents securely and tracking project progress. This setup allows for flexible scheduling but requires strong time management and proactive communication skills to ensure all stakeholders are informed and engaged.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual financial controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Financial Controller, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, and analysis, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and relevant certifications such as CPA or ACCA. Familiarity with cloud-based accounting software like QuickBooks Online or Xero, as well as proficiency in Excel and ERP systems, is essential. Excellent organizational skills, proactive communication, and the ability to work independently are standout soft skills for this remote position. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining financial accuracy, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing strategic insights to support business growth in a virtual environment.

What is the difference between Virtual Financial Controller vs Virtual Bookkeeper?

AspectVirtual Financial ControllerVirtual Bookkeeper
CredentialsAccounting degree, CPA or equivalent often preferredBasic bookkeeping certification or none required
Work EnvironmentStrategic financial planning, analysis, and oversightData entry, transaction recording, and basic financial record keeping
Employer & Industry UsageSmall to medium businesses, startups, and consulting firmsSmall businesses, freelance, and online service providers

The Virtual Financial Controller focuses on high-level financial management, analysis, and strategic planning, often requiring advanced credentials. In contrast, a Virtual Bookkeeper handles day-to-day transaction recording and basic financial data entry. While both roles support business financial health, the Controller provides oversight and strategic insights, whereas the Bookkeeper maintains accurate records. Understanding these differences helps businesses choose the right financial support for their needs.

Can a virtual financial controller work remotely?

A virtual financial controller can work remotely, as the role primarily involves financial management, reporting, and analysis that can be performed using cloud-based accounting software and communication tools. Many virtual financial controllers operate from home or other remote locations, often collaborating with clients via video calls, email, and online platforms. The ability to work remotely depends on the employer's policies and the specific tools used for remote access and communication.

How much does a virtual financial controller get paid?

A virtual financial controller typically earns between $70,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and company size. Compensation may also include benefits and bonuses, and some controllers work on an hourly basis, earning $50 to $150 per hour. Advanced certifications like CPA or CMA can influence salary levels.

Job description

About the Role

Reporting directly to the CFO, you’ll be the keystone of our accounting operations—handling everything from month-end close to detailed Percentage-of-Completion (POC) and Work-in-Progress (WIP) accounting. This role combines hands-on financial control with a collaborative spirit: you’ll support and train project teams, streamline processes, and maintain the accuracy and integrity that keep our business running smoothly.

At Paul Davis Restoration, we’re dedicated to rebuilding communities and restoring peace of mind after disaster strikes. Located in the heart of the National Capital Region, our team takes pride in delivering fast, reliable restoration services with a personal touch. We’re looking for a Controller who thrives in a dynamic environment and wants to make a tangible impact by ensuring our financial backbone is as strong as our fieldwork.

What We Offer

Joining Paul Davis Restoration means becoming part of a supportive, hardworking team that values transparency and growth. You’ll enjoy a hybrid work setting tailored to balance focus and collaboration, with opportunities to expand your skill set and leadership within a stable and respected company. We provide competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and the chance to see the real impact of your work through the success of projects and people around you.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead and own the monthly close process, reconciliations, and ensuring financial accuracy.
  • Manage and analyze POC/WIP accounting, including schedules, journal entries, variance assessments, and forecasts.
  • Maintain strong accounting controls, clear audit trails, and up-to-date documentation.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable with backup coverage, resolving vendor disputes and managing lien waivers.
  • Support Accounts Receivable and billing functions, ensuring program compliance and accurate progress billing.
  • Train project managers, estimators, and coordinators in AR/billing standards and documentation.
  • Administer payroll setups, deductions, garnishments, and timekeeping coordination through QuickBooks Payroll and BambooHR.
  • Handle compliance matters including 1099s, gross receipts taxes, business licenses, insurance renewals, and workers’ compensation audits.
  • Maintain vehicle-related accounts and support monthly work comp premium reporting.
  • Lead year-end close activities and prepare schedules for tax accounting.
  • Coordinate with virtual staff to delegate tasks and maintain standard operating procedures.

Who You Are

  • You bring at least 5 years of accounting experience, ideally as a Controller or Senior Accountant in the construction or related industry.
  • You’re proficient in QuickBooks and QuickBooks Payroll with a solid understanding of integrations such as time-tracking systems.
  • Your experience with POC/WIP accounting is detailed and hands-on—you know the ins and outs of the numbers and their story.
  • You’re comfortable working directly with operations teams, training others, and maintaining disciplined documentation practices.
  • Detail-oriented and trustworthy, you handle sensitive financial data with care and confidentiality.

If you’re ready to bring your expertise to a role that challenges and rewards you, we’d love to hear from you.
