Job description

This position is responsible for professional virtual instruction in the AP Academy designed to provide academic development for students in specific grades/subject areas to prepare them to be successful citizens and workers in the 21st century.


  1. Creates a virtual educational environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and needs of the students; prepares virtual instructional materials for assigned virtual courses to support the number of sections and/or courses regardless of location of virtual delivery (whether from assigned school or Board location) and provides written evidence of preparation to administrator/director/manager upon request.
  2. Utilizes the College Board approved curriculum (videoed lessons are strongly suggested for students to review) and syllabus and prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of students within state, school, and College Board requirements based on the educational, physical, and emotional levels of student development. Maintains an online platform for the dissemination, submission, and review of student work. Reviews virtual student submissions to formatively assess student progress and respond accordingly to maintain progress toward preparation for the AP exam.
  3. Develops a variety of virtual classroom instructional groupings (through breakout rooms) and utilizes higher levels of thinking skills (analysis, synthesis).
  4. Utilizes intense classroom effectiveness, demonstrated through evaluations and unique virtual classroom lessons and strategies.
  5. Instructs students by using virtual educational strategies and techniques to improve development in sight and hearing sensory skills, perception, memory, written language, online communication skills and cognition.
  6. Establishes and enforces a standard of virtual behavior contributing to high student engagement. Motivates students and provides consistent reinforcement of learning skills and provides continuous assessment and feedback to students for all virtual learning activities.
  7. Assesses the accomplishments of students on an established timetable and provides written and oral progress reports to parents/guardians, administrator, director, and manager; Administers practice AP exams virtually and in-person, per College Board practice test security policy, to prepare students for the AP exam in May.
  8. Confers with parents and appropriate resource staff to develop educational programs for students. The resource staff will train teachers and will monitor and assist by emailing, calling, and observing the teachers while providing feedback and goals for improvement.
  9. Mentors current AP teachers and/or teachers being trained for AP classes. Mentoring will include observing and offering content-specific feedback and materials to support the capacity-building of the teachers.
  10. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, District and school regulations.
  11. Possesses a highly developed and specialized content knowledge, beyond the bachelor's degree level.
  12. Participates in professional development (in and outside Shelby County Schools) provided by the District, College Board, and otherwise required to maintain College Board and State teaching approval.
  13. Demonstrates growth in student learning and leadership in professional development.
  14. Assists administration in implementing all policies and rules governing online student conduct.
  15. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Education and an endorsement in the grade/subject taught with a valid Tennessee certificate. Governed by the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Code Annotated and the collective bargaining agreement.  Prior virtual instruction experiences preferred.  Knowledge of Canvas Learner Management System and Microsoft Teams preferred. Ability to operate a computer, to use appropriate software applications and to operate video recording equipment required.

(PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED).

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience preferred. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
