What is a virtual director?

A Virtual Director is a professional who oversees and manages aspects of a company or organization remotely, using digital tools and platforms. They perform leadership functions similar to those of an in-person director, such as strategic planning, decision-making, and team coordination, but operate virtually rather than on-site. Virtual Directors are increasingly common in businesses that support remote work or have distributed teams, enabling organizations to access executive expertise regardless of location. Their responsibilities may vary depending on the industry but generally involve leading projects, managing teams, and contributing to organizational growth from a remote setting.

How does a virtual director effectively lead and motivate remote teams across different time zones?

A Virtual Director typically leverages a combination of strong communication skills, digital collaboration tools, and clear goal-setting to lead remote teams effectively. Regular virtual meetings, transparent project management systems, and setting clear expectations help maintain alignment and motivation despite geographic dispersion. Additionally, fostering a culture of trust, recognizing achievements, and being mindful of different time zones when scheduling meetings are essential strategies for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Director, you need strong leadership, project management, and strategic planning abilities, often supported by a relevant degree and significant managerial experience. Familiarity with virtual collaboration tools (such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and project management software), and sometimes certifications in remote or agile management, are commonly required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and emotional intelligence are crucial soft skills for building trust and guiding remote teams effectively. These skills ensure seamless virtual operations, drive team engagement, and deliver organizational goals in a distributed work environment.

What is the difference between Virtual Director vs Virtual Manager?

Job description

Founding Head of Sales (Vice President / Director Level)

About Powder Watts

Powder Watts is transforming one of the largest untapped energy opportunities in North America into an intelligent, utility-scale energy resource.

Our patented platform combines AI, computer vision, intelligent controls, and cloud software to optimize rooftop snow-melt and heat cable systemsโ€”helping customers protect their properties, dramatically reduce electricity costs, and support a more resilient electric grid.

We're already working with utilities, commercial customers, hotels, resorts, Homeowners' Associations (HOAs), property managers, and strategic partners to deploy a solution that creates immediate customer value while unlocking a new category of distributed energy resources and positioning Powder Watts as a future leader in grid-capacity and virtual power plant solutions.

We're now looking for an exceptional sales leader to help scale our commercial business and strategic partnerships.

The Opportunity

This is not a traditional sales leadership role.

We're looking for someone who measures success by business outcomesโ€”not activity. Someone who naturally identifies opportunities, removes obstacles, and helps move the entire company forward.

You'll personally originate and close strategic opportunities across hospitality, commercial real estate, property management, HOAs, and enterprise portfolios while building the sales organization, partnerships, and systems needed to scale Powder Watts nationally.

You'll also help develop strategic relationships with utilities and energy partners as Powder Watts expands into demand response, virtual power plants, and grid-capacity services.

This is a true player-coach position.

One day you'll be closing a strategic customer. The next you'll be recruiting talent, building channel partnerships, refining the sales process, or removing obstacles to growth.

If you're looking for an established organization with mature processes and support teams, this probably isn't the right opportunity.

If you're energized by building companies rather than simply managing them, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Own

  • Personally originate, negotiate, and close commercial opportunities.
  • Develop scalable, cost-effective lead generation and customer acquisition strategies.
  • Build a repeatable sales engine that consistently generates qualified pipeline and revenue.
  • Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing sales organization.
  • Develop strategic partnerships while building scalable sales processes, forecasting, CRM discipline, and performance metrics.
  • Partner closely with Product, Marketing, and Operations to accelerate growth.
  • Help shape the Company's long-term commercial strategy.

What Success Looks Like

You'll be successful if you:

  • Generate consistent, measurable revenue growth through direct sales, partnerships, and repeatable customer acquisition.
  • Build a scalable, high-performing sales organization.
  • Create strategic partnerships that accelerate growth.
  • Help scale Powder Watts into a nationally recognized commercial business.

Required Experience

You should have:

  • Proven success driving revenue growth in an early-stage or high-growth company.
  • A track record of personally sourcing, negotiating, and closing complex commercial or enterprise sales.
  • Proficiency with HubSpot or comparable CRM platforms, including workflows, automation, reporting, and lead management.
  • A true player-coach leadership styleโ€”you enjoy selling as much as leading.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to thrive in ambiguity, adapt quickly, prioritize effectively, and execute with limited resources.
  • Success developing strategic partnerships, channel relationships, and other growth initiatives.
  • Strong executive communication, negotiation, organizational, and relationship-building skills.

Preferred Experience

Preferred experience includes:

  • Energy, utilities, demand response, virtual power plants, distributed energy resources, or energy efficiency.
  • Building technologies, installed products, IoT, or hardware-enabled SaaS.
  • Commercial real estate, hospitality, property management, channel sales, or strategic partnerships.

Location

Candidates should be located in Utah, willing to relocate, or able to spend significant time in Utah during this growth phase.

Regular travel to customers, partners, and priority markets is expected.

Why Join Powder Watts?

This is a rare opportunity to help create a new category in the energy industry.

This is an opportunity to shape the commercial strategy, build a high-performing sales organization, and create significant long-term enterprise value.

Compensation

We offer a competitive executive compensation package that includes base salary, performance-based incentive compensation, and meaningful early-stage equity participation.

  • Base salary: $150,000โ€“$180,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Performance-based incentive compensation.
  • Meaningful early-stage equity participation.

The pay range for this role is:

150, 000 - 180, 000 USD per year (Main Office)
