What does a Virtual CIO do?

A virtual CIO acts as a chief information officer of a business. They often work for consulting firms that specialize in providing executive level guidance for IT. Job Description
General Scope of Duties
General Scope of Duties
The Deputy Chief Information Officer (Deputy CIO) serves as the senior technology strategist and operational leader within Library & Information Technology at Connecticut College. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Information Services and Librarian of the College (CIO), the Deputy CIO is responsible for translating institutional strategy into technology execution, ensuring the operational resilience and scalability of the College's technology infrastructure, and serving as the primary technology leadership partner to the VP. During an initial transitional period (12-14 months), this role will also serve as Acting Director of Enterprise Systems, providing direct oversight and stabilization leadership to the Enterprise Systems team while the College evaluates its long-term ERP modernization path. Following this initial period, the role transitions to broader strategic oversight while serving as the VP's primary strategic partner for all infrastructure and enterprise systems initiatives. This position is in-person with potential to work remotely one day per week; In-person collaboration will be essential for key events and meetings.
About Library & Information Technology at Connecticut CollegeLibrary & Information Technology (L&IT) at Connecticut College is where librarians, technologists, archivists, media specialists, and everything in between come together as one team. We manage the systems that run the College, the network that connects it, the library that anchors it, and the research support that makes academic excellence possible. Whether someone needs help finding a rare archival document, troubleshooting a classroom projector five minutes before class, or thinking through the future of AI on a liberal arts campus, that's us. And we don't work in a bubble. Our staff regularly connect with colleagues at peer institutions through consortia like the Boston Library Consortium, the Oberlin Group, CLAC, and NERCOMP, because we believe the best ideas rarely stay inside one campus.
Why You'll Love It Here (And Why We'll Love You)
Our leadership philosophy is pretty simple: We hire naturally curious people, give them room to be brilliant, and then get out of their way. We treat belonging and inclusion as the foundation of our work, not a footnote. We value collaboration over control, and we believe that while the work is serious, we absolutely do not have to take ourselves too seriously. If you can work hard, lead with curiosity, tolerate the occasional Swedish-inspired coffee break (look up fika), and agree that laughter is a legitimate workplace requirement, you'll fit right in.
