What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Camera Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Camera Operator, you need a solid background in cinematography principles, camera movement, and digital video production, often supported by relevant education or experience in film, animation, or game design. Proficiency with 3D animation software (such as Unreal Engine or Maya), motion capture technology, and virtual production tools is typically required. Strong collaboration, creativity, and communication skills help operators effectively translate directors’ visions in virtual environments. These skills are essential for creating visually compelling virtual scenes that align with creative objectives and technical requirements.

How does a Virtual Camera Operator typically collaborate with other departments in a film or animation production?

A Virtual Camera Operator works closely with directors, cinematographers, animators, and visual effects teams to achieve the desired visual storytelling. They often participate in pre-visualization meetings to understand the creative vision and use specialized software to simulate camera movements within a digital environment. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as the operator must integrate feedback from multiple departments to ensure the virtual shots align with both artistic goals and technical requirements. This collaborative process is key to creating seamless and dynamic sequences in modern film and animation projects.

What is a Virtual Camera?

A virtual camera is a software-based camera that simulates the functionality of a physical webcam, allowing users to broadcast video, images, or screen content from their computer as if it were a live camera feed. This technology is commonly used in video conferencing, streaming, and content creation to enhance visual presentations or add effects. Virtual cameras can also integrate with other software to display overlays, backgrounds, or pre-recorded content. They are popular tools for remote work, online teaching, and live streaming due to their flexibility and versatility.

What is the difference between Virtual Camera vs Video Editor?

Job description

#WeAreParamount on a mission to unleash the power of content... you in?
We've got the brands, we've got the stars, we've got the power to achieve our mission to entertain the planet - now all we're missing is... YOU! Becoming a part of Paramount means joining a team of passionate people who not only recognize the power of content but also enjoy a touch of fun and uniqueness. Together, we co-create moments that matter - both for our audiences and our employees - and aim to leave a positive mark on culture.

CBS Stations is hiring a creative and enterprising Augmented and Virtual Reality Weather Developer to help lead the next generation of data driven weather storytelling for live broadcast.

This role focuses on developing immersive AR/VR weather tools and environments that empower top meteorologists to tell clearer, more compelling, and more precise weather stories-especially during severe weather and major news events.

You will support the design, engineering, and deployment of real-time, data-driven AR/VR weather experiences used daily across CBS Stations, working at the intersection of weather data, Unreal Engine development, live broadcast systems, and virtual production. We are open to considering the office location for this position as any one of our CBS O&O stations.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, engineer, and implement data driven AR/VR weather tools and solutions for live broadcast.
  • Develop immersive Unreal Engine based weather environments that enhance meteorologist storytelling and data visualization.
  • Integrate real-time and near real-time weather data into AR/VR graphics and virtual scenes across CBS Stations.
  • Deploy, maintain and support AR/VR technology infrastructure to ensure high reliability, performance, security and scalability.
  • Implement and maintain standards for software, system and environment architecture to meet enterprise level requirements for redundancy, security, and performance.
  • Collaborate closely with meteorologists, weather producers, creative services, engineering, and newsroom teams to design and execute solutions.
  • Troubleshoot, support, and resolve technical issues in fast-paced, deadline-driven, live broadcast settings, including breaking news and severe weather coverage.
  • Provide technical training and support to colleagues using AR/VR tools in production environments across CBS Stations.
  • Contribute to ongoing workflow, testing, and pipeline improvements
  • Operate successfully in a deadline driven, live broadcast environment
  • Participate in cross-team initiatives spanning News, Weather and Special Coverage

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience supporting AR/VR production in a broadcast environment
  • Strong background in AR/VR development for real time or live applications
  • Proficiency in Unreal Engine development, including Blueprinting familiarity with other AR/VR platforms and interfaces.
  • Experience with motion tracking systems and virtual camera workflows.
  • Solid knowledge of live broadcast workflows, including traditional and modern weather presentation systems.
  • Knowledge of 3D modeling software suites, such as Blender and emerging applications.
  • Working knowledge of IT Systems, Networking, and REST APIs
  • Deep practical knowledge of SCRUM, AGILE and DRY Software Development principles
  • Proficiency developing software in REACT, Golang, C++
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across technical, creative, and editorial teams with evolving priorities.
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Willingness to travel as required.

Why This Role Matters
AR/VR weather is no longer experimental at CBS Stations-it is a core storytelling tool used daily by some of the most trusted meteorologists in the country. This role directly shapes how millions of viewers understand weather events that impact their lives, from everyday forecasts to life-saving severe weather coverage. You'll help build scalable, repeatable, and data-driven tools that set the visual standard for modern broadcast weather across the CBS footprint.
