What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Bioinformatics Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Bioinformatics Data Scientist, you need a strong background in biology, statistics, and computer science, often supported by an advanced degree in bioinformatics or a related field. Proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, experience with bioinformatics tools (e.g., BLAST, GATK), and familiarity with cloud computing platforms are typically required. Outstanding analytical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for extracting meaningful insights from complex biological data and facilitating impactful research in a remote, interdisciplinary environment.

What is a Virtual Bioinformatics Data Scientist?

A Virtual Bioinformatics Data Scientist is a professional who analyzes and interprets complex biological data, such as genomic sequences, using computational tools and statistical techniques, often working remotely. They collaborate with researchers and healthcare professionals to process large datasets, develop algorithms, and extract meaningful insights that advance scientific or clinical research. The 'virtual' aspect means they perform their duties online, leveraging cloud platforms and remote collaboration tools. This role requires expertise in biology, computer science, and data analytics. Their work supports advancements in fields like personalized medicine, drug development, and genomics.

What is the difference between Virtual Bioinformatics Data Scientist vs Virtual Bioinformatics Analyst?

AspectVirtual Bioinformatics Data ScientistVirtual Bioinformatics Analyst
Required CredentialsTypically requires a master's or Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related fieldsUsually holds a bachelor's or master's degree in bioinformatics, biology, or related areas
Work EnvironmentConducts complex data modeling, algorithm development, and predictive analyticsFocuses on data interpretation, report generation, and supporting research teams
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in biotech, pharmaceutical, and research institutions for advanced data analysisCommon in research labs, healthcare, and biotech companies for data support roles

The Virtual Bioinformatics Data Scientist and Virtual Bioinformatics Analyst roles share overlapping skills but differ mainly in complexity and focus. Data scientists handle advanced modeling and algorithm development, often requiring higher credentials, while analysts focus on data interpretation and reporting. Both roles are vital in biotech and research industries, but their responsibilities and expertise levels vary.

How does a Virtual Bioinformatics Data Scientist typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a remote setting?

As a Virtual Bioinformatics Data Scientist, you will regularly collaborate with biologists, clinicians, and software engineers via digital communication and project management platforms. Effective communication is crucial, as you’ll be expected to translate complex data findings into actionable insights for non-technical team members. Most virtual teams use tools like Slack, Zoom, and shared cloud-based repositories to facilitate real-time collaboration and feedback. Proactive participation in virtual meetings, clear documentation, and adaptability to asynchronous workflows are key to successful teamwork in this remote role.

Axle is a bioscience and information technology company that offers advancements in translational research, biomedical informatics, and data science applications to research centers and healthcare organizations nationally and abroad. With experts in biomedical science, software engineering, and program management, we focus on developing and applying research tools and techniques to empower decision-making and accelerate research discoveries. We work with some of the top research organizations and facilities in the country including multiple institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Axle is seeking a Bioinformatics/Data Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the Standardized Organoid Model Center in Frederick, MD. The Standardized Organoid Model Center is an NIH-funded initiative dedicated to advancing organoid research through the development of validated, reproducible, and well-characterized organoid models. The center brings together interdisciplinary teams of researchers to establish standardized protocols, develop quality control measures, and create resources that will benefit the broader organoid research community.

Benefits We Offer:

  • 100% Medical, Dental & Vision Coverage for Employees
  • Paid Time Off and Paid Holidays
  • 401K match up to 5%
  • Educational Benefits for Career Growth
  • Employee Referral Bonus
  • Flexible Spending Accounts:
    • Healthcare (FSA)
    • Parking Reimbursement Account (PRK)
    • Dependent Care Assistant Program (DCAP)
    • Transportation Reimbursement Account (TRN)

Overview

The Bioinformatics/Data Scientist will conduct comprehensive analyses of multi-omics data generated from organoid systems and corresponding normal tissues. This position is central to the SOM Center's research objectives, focusing on characterizing organoid fidelity, identifying biomarkers of successful differentiation, and developing computational frameworks for organoid quality assessment.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will analyze complex datasets including single-cell RNA sequencing, bulk RNA sequencing, proteomics, and metabolomics data from various organoid systems and their tissue counterparts.
