What is a virtual attorney?

A Virtual Attorney is a licensed lawyer who provides legal services to clients remotely, often using digital communication tools like email, video calls, and secure document-sharing platforms. This allows clients to receive legal advice and representation without needing to visit a physical office. Virtual attorneys can handle a wide range of legal matters, including contract review, legal consultations, and even court representation in some cases. They offer flexibility and convenience, making legal services more accessible and cost-effective.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a virtual attorney?

To thrive as a Virtual Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor degree, bar licensure, and strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills. Familiarity with digital case management platforms, secure communication tools, and e-filing systems is typically required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear virtual communication are essential soft skills for remote client representation. These competencies ensure effective, compliant legal service delivery and foster trust with clients in a virtual environment.

How does a virtual attorney typically collaborate with clients and colleagues remotely?

Virtual attorneys primarily use secure digital tools—such as video conferencing, encrypted email, and cloud-based document management platforms—to communicate and collaborate. Regular virtual meetings and collaborative documents are common, and many firms use client portals to facilitate secure document sharing and case updates. While remote work offers flexibility, it also requires strong organizational skills to manage multiple clients and stay responsive. Building rapport and trust virtually can be a challenge, but proactive communication and clear expectations help foster strong professional relationships.

Job description

Ascension Global Staffing & Executive Search, a Hispanic Women Owned & Operated National Recruiting Firm stands at the forefront of innovation and excellence. Led by a visionary team with a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion, our firm is dedicated to identifying and attracting top talent across the nation. With a unique blend of cultural insight and professional expertise, we pride ourselves on creating an environment that fosters success for both employers and candidates.
A well-established financial services litigation firm is seeking a Massachusetts-licensed attorney to manage bank garnishments, subpoenas, and legal orders for its banking clients. The role begins as a part-time contract engagement (approximately 10 hours per week REMOTE) with volume expected to scale, and a path to permanent hire for the right attorney. Work is primarily remote, with court appearances handled virtually in most instances. This is a strong fit for an attorney who wants meaningful, self-directed work on a flexible schedule: a solo practitioner adding a steady engagement, an attorney returning to practice, or an experienced professional seeking part-time work with growth potential.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Review, analyze, and respond to legal orders served on banking clients, including garnishments, attachments, levies, subpoenas, temporary restraining orders, and search and seizure warrants (the full landscape spans roughly 300 legal order types).
Appear in court as needed, primarily by virtual appearance with occasional in-person appearances in Massachusetts.
Manage response deadlines with urgency and precision; legal orders are time-sensitive and errors carry compliance consequences for the client.
Work independently, owning matters end to end with minimal supervision, and escalate judgment calls appropriately.
Report directly to the supervising partner, with clear communication on volume, status, and capacity.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Active membership in good standing with the Massachusetts Bar.
Required: Strong analytical skills and a demonstrated sense of urgency; ability to triage and prioritize time-sensitive orders.
Required: Self-directed ownership mindset. This role rewards accountability and follow-through over years of experience.
Preferred: Experience with legal order processing, creditors' rights, banking operations, or financial services litigation.
Preferred: Comfort with virtual court platforms and electronic filing systems.
ENGAGEMENT STRUCTURE
Temp-to-hire: Begin on a contract basis through Ascension Global Staffing & Executive Search, with conversion to direct hire based on performance.
Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week to start, scaling with bank case volume.
Location: Primarily remote; occasional in-person court appearances in Massachusetts.
Compensation: Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience.
