What is virtual accounting?

Virtual accounting is a service where professional accountants handle financial tasks remotely, often using cloud-based software and secure internet connections. Instead of working onsite, virtual accountants manage bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, and other accounting needs from a distance. This approach allows businesses to access expert financial support without maintaining an in-house accounting department, offering flexibility and cost savings. Virtual accounting can be especially beneficial for small businesses or startups looking to streamline their operations.

How does a virtual accountant typically collaborate with clients and team members remotely?

Virtual accountants primarily use cloud-based accounting software, secure file-sharing platforms, and video conferencing tools to communicate with clients and colleagues. Regular check-ins, scheduled meetings, and real-time updates help maintain transparency and streamline workflow. Effective remote collaboration requires clear communication, prompt responsiveness, and a proactive approach to managing tasks and deadlines, ensuring all parties stay aligned despite not sharing a physical office.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and bookkeeping, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with cloud-based accounting software like QuickBooks Online or Xero, and relevant certifications (such as CPA or CMA), are often required. Excellent time management, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help build client trust and ensure accuracy in remote work environments. These capabilities are crucial for delivering reliable financial services and maintaining client satisfaction in a virtual setting.

What is the difference between Virtual Accounting vs Bookkeeping?

How to become a virtual accountant?

To become a virtual accountant, you typically need a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, along with proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks or Xero. Gaining relevant certifications like CPA or CMA can enhance job prospects, and strong communication and organizational skills are essential for remote work environments.

What does a virtual accountant do?

A virtual accountant performs accounting tasks remotely, including preparing financial statements, managing bookkeeping, reconciling accounts, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations. They often use accounting software like QuickBooks or Xero and communicate with clients via email or video calls. Job description

CK Specialty Insurance Associates

Who We Are

CK Specialty Insurance Associates is a growing, entrepreneurial specialty insurance company focused on hard-to-place commercial risks. We operate in the wholesale and E&S space and move fast. Our team is hands-on, collaborative, and expected to take ownership, solve problems, and get things done. Everyone has a direct impact on the business, and we value people who bring initiative, solve problems, and are excited to grow with the company.

We are currently looking for an Accounting Specialist to support our day-to-day accounting operations, with a primary focus on accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash application, payment processing, reconciliations, and insurance-related accounting transactions.

This is a great opportunity for someone with accounting experience who wants to build their career within the specialty insurance industry. Insurance accounting experience is strongly preferred, particularly experience with an insurance agency, MGA, wholesale brokerage, or carrier.

Responsibilities
  • Manage daily AR and AP activities, including email and phone inquiries.
  • Download and review weekly bank transactions for deposits and payments.
  • Apply cash receipts and process deposits in JetFile.
  • Process carrier, agent, tax, and other approved payments through checks, EFT, and online payment systems.
  • Review and reconcile bank activity, unapplied cash, the London account, and other assigned accounts.
  • Enter direct bill commission receipts and other insurance-related transactions into JetFile.
  • Review exception reports, research discrepancies, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Process recurring and non-trade AP invoices and prepare weekly AP reporting.
  • Prepare and enter journal entries related to assigned accounting activities.
  • Work closely with the Controller to resolve discrepancies and maintain accurate financial records.

RequirementsQualifications
  • 2–4 years of accounting experience in AR, AP, or a similar accounting role.
  • Insurance accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles and financial transactions.
  • Experience with reconciliations, cash application, payment processing, and/or journal entries.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with an insurance agency management or accounting system is a plus.
What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is detail-oriented, accountable, organized, and comfortable working independently. The ideal candidate understands that insurance accounting involves more than simply entering transactions and can understand the financial relationship between premiums, commissions, carriers, agents, and payments.

This role is focused on accounting and financial transactions, rather than policy administration or general insurance operations.
