Job Description:

This recruitment will be used to fill up to 2 part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Video Reporters for the Orenge Media Network at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Video reporter is responsible for pitching, researching, and writing/creating multimedia stories for OMN's news teams, primarilyforThe Daily Barometerand Beaver's Digest, as required bytheeditor-in-chief of the publications.

The Undergraduate Student Clerical Worker performs general office work such as typing, copying, filing, sorting, indexing, reception duties, and accounting tasks.

Position Duties:

  • Pitches, accepts and develops story ideas that have news value for the OSU community. Conducts research and necessary interviews to produce thorough video news stories that include multiple relevant perspectives. Remains objective and provides fair and accurate coverage. Pursues news in a timely fashion. Cover breaking news as needed.

  • Video reporter is responsible for conducting interviews with sources, shooting and editing video, writing scripts and providing narration for video stories.Responsible for editing together news videos between 60 - 1:30, under direction of TV news producer and/or publication editors-in-chief. Prepare information for on-screen graphics. Shares stories on social media to reach audience. May be asked to present their story live in studio. May be asked to create horizontal and vertical versions of stories.

  • Attends all staff and team meetings, including weekly reporter meeting. Participates in critique sessions with producer to make any necessary revisions in style or content. Able to act as mentors to new hires.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Communication

  • Respond to emails, messages, teamchatsand phone calls the same day, professionallyrepresentingOMN. Ensuring you are using,checkingand responding to project managementplatform(Basecamp, Discord, etc.). Proactively communicates work status with editor(s).

  • Notify adviserimmediatelyshould any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur.

Leadership

  • Follow all OMN policies and proceduresincluding professionalism and deadlines.

  • Ensure designs and content are centered onequitablerepresentation and inclusion, with attention to impact on historically underrepresented and marginalized communities and constituencies.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study

  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term

    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*

    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term

    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by theOffice of International Services(OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Required Qualifications:

  • Is knowledgeable of or willing to learn news gathering and fact checking strategies

  • Beginner experience shooting or editing video

  • Willing to learn AP style and work within the SPJ Code of Ethics

  • Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and academic breaks

  • Able to meet deadlines

  • Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking

  • Is organized and reliable

  • Is experienced with giving and receiving feedback

Working Conditions/Schedule:Employment is through the academic year. May require standing or sitting for extended periods and occasional lifting.
