Position: Restoration Technician
Location: Hollywood/Santa Monica, CA (Hybrid)
*Pay Range: $30.00 - $35.00 hourly USD
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Restoration Technician is responsible for restoring and preserving motion picture and television content using advanced digital restoration tools and techniques. This role combines technical expertise with a strong understanding of cinematic image quality to repair physical and digital defects all while maintaining the creative integrity and historical authenticity of the original material.
Additionally, the role evaluates source materials, develops restoration workflows, performs rigorous quality control, maintains project documentation, and delivers high-quality results within production deadlines and archival standards. Restoration projects may include feature films, episodic television, documentaries, archival footage, trailers, and promotional content. This position reports to the VP, Global Deliverables and will usually report out of the Hollywood studio, however flexibility it required to work from the Santa Monica studios as client/project needs require. Typical business hours are from 9am-6pm with possibility for overtime work as project needs require.
MAIN DUTIES:
The Restoration Technician will perform digital image restoration on scanned film and digital assets, including:
  • Dirt, dust, scratch, and debris removal.
  • Flicker, stability, and weave correction.
  • Grain management and noise reduction.
  • Repair of torn, warped, or damaged frames.
  • Removal of mold, stains, and chemical deterioration artifacts.
  • Image reconstruction and paint work for severely damaged footage.
  • Utilize restoration software such as MTI DRS™ NOVA, Digital Vision Phoenix, HS-ART Diamant, or equivalent platforms.
  • Work from high-resolution image sequences (2K, 4K, 6K, 8K) while maintaining color fidelity and image integrity.
  •  Perform manual frame-by-frame restoration where automated processes are insufficient.
Other duties include:
  • Evaluate source materials and recommend restoration workflows based on image condition and project requirements.
  • Conduct quality control reviews to identify remaining defects and verify consistency throughout the restored program.
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation in accordance with archival and studio standards.
  • Meet production schedules while maintaining the highest level of technical and artistic quality.

WHAT YOU BRING:
The ideal candidate will bring previous experience as a restoration artist with in depth knowledge of MTI Nova, PFClean and /or Phoenix finish. They will understand production workflows, timelines and deliverables. They will have an understanding of home entertainment, film/TV post production and marketing. They will bring a proven ability to work quickly and independently, anticipating, recognizing and resolving problems with little to no supervision. The ideal candidate will also bring the following:
  • Experience with MS Office software suite & MAC operating systems as well as Google Suite.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Polite and professional with a positive and optimistic approach.
  • Ability to work on own initiative but also be a good team player.
  • Flexible with the ability to work in a fast paced demanding environment.
  • Flexibility to work overtime and/or weekends with little or short notice.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to cooperate, contribute, and integrate in a team environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and keep track of ongoing projects.
  • Extremely detail oriented.
Nice to Have:
  • Previous experience in restoration / VFX in a production environment or entertainment industry.
