Job description

Senate Photographic Services is seeking two experienced Multimedia Video Producer/Editors to help expand and modernize the visual storytelling services provided to the United States Senate.

This is an opportunity to create polished, relevant, and engaging official video content in one of the most historically significant working environments in the country. The successful candidates will help produce contemporary, executive-level visual communications while maintaining the professionalism, discretion, accuracy, and nonpartisan standards required when serving the Senate.

The official position title is Visual Information Specialist, but the work closely aligns with that of a multimedia producer, videographer, and video editor. These positions will plan, capture, edit, and deliver video content for Senate offices and institutional clients. While candidates should be capable behind the camera, advanced editing ability is essential.

The strongest candidates will understand how to turn an assignment, event, interview, or executive message into a concise visual story that feels current, holds the viewer’s attention, and works effectively across websites, digital communications, and social media platforms.

What You Will Do

  • Plan, film, edit, and deliver professional video productions from initial concept through final distribution.
  • Serve as a primary editor for short-form, social-first, executive, documentary, and informational video content.
  • Transform raw footage into focused and engaging stories through strong pacing, sequencing, sound design, music selection, graphics, captions, and visual continuity.
  • Produce multiple versions of content for different audiences, durations, and formats, including vertical, horizontal, square, short-form, and longer-form presentations.
  • Work directly with Senate offices, senior officials, public figures, and internal partners to understand objectives and recommend effective visual approaches.
  • Capture interviews, official events, behind-the-scenes activity, public-facing programs, and other historically or institutionally significant assignments.
  • Operate and troubleshoot professional cameras, audio equipment, lighting systems, and related production technology.
  • Perform color correction, audio mixing, captioning, file preparation, quality control, and final export for multiple delivery platforms.
  • Apply current video-production techniques without sacrificing accuracy, institutional standards, or the dignity appropriate to official Senate communications.
  • Contribute creative ideas for improving Senate Photographic Services’ growing video and short-form content capabilities.
  • Support still photography, photo editing, retouching, metadata, and related visual-production needs when required.
  • Maintain organized project files, footage, media assets, production equipment, and archival materials.
  • Work collaboratively in a high-volume environment where assignments, priorities, and deadlines may change quickly.

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking experienced visual storytellers who can work on a team while combining strong technical production skills with editorial judgment, creativity, professionalism, and reliability.

Successful candidates should be able to recognize the strongest moments within an assignment, identify the story, and create a finished product rather than simply assemble footage. They should understand how composition, pacing, natural sound, interview selections, graphics, music, and captions work together to make content clear and compelling.

Candidates should also be comfortable working with senior leaders and public officials in environments where discretion, preparation, responsiveness, and professional conduct are essential.

Required Qualifications

  • Five to seven years of professional experience in videography, video editing, photography, multimedia production, or closely related visual-media work.
  • Demonstrated professional video-editing experience and a portfolio or reel showing completed work.
  • Advanced proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro or another professional nonlinear editing platform.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite applications such as Photoshop and Lightroom.
  • Thorough understanding of video production, including camera operation, lighting, audio capture, composition, frame rates, codecs, color, and media management.
  • Ability to independently take a project from concept and production through editing, revision, and final delivery.
  • Experience producing concise content intended for digital or social media distribution.
  • Ability to maintain quality and accuracy while meeting short deadlines.
  • Strong communication, organization, collaboration, and customer-service skills.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to handle sensitive assignments and information appropriately.
  • Ability to establish productive working relationships with colleagues, clients, senior officials, and production partners.
  • Ability to carry, position, and operate professional production equipment and remain standing or moving for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience producing video for executive communications, journalism, public affairs, government, corporate communications, documentary work, or a high-profile institutional client.
  • Strong experience editing interviews, executive messages, event coverage, profiles, explainers, and short-form narrative content.
  • Experience creating platform-specific vertical and horizontal edits from the same source material.
  • Knowledge of After Effects, motion graphics, animated titles, or other graphics tools.
  • Experience with professional color grading, audio cleanup, sound design, and captioning workflows.
  • Still-photography experience, including photojournalism, event coverage, portraiture, or image retouching.
  • Experience working in a fast-moving environment with high-profile subjects and changing priorities.
  • Familiarity with digital asset management, metadata, archival standards, or media-delivery workflows.

What Success Looks Like

A successful Multimedia Video Producer/Editor will:

  • Deliver polished, accurate, and engaging work that meets professional industry standards.
  • Bring a modern visual approach to official Senate content while exercising appropriate judgment and restraint.
  • Edit efficiently and make informed creative decisions rather than relying entirely on detailed direction.
  • Recognize what makes a story relevant to its intended audience.
  • Produce strong short-form content without losing context, accuracy, or institutional value.
  • Respond calmly and professionally when schedules, assignments, or production conditions change.
  • Earn the confidence of clients through preparation, discretion, communication, and consistent results.
  • Contribute ideas that help Senate Photographic Services continue developing its video and multimedia capabilities.

Salary and Growth

Expected starting salary: $85,000 to $95,000 annually, based on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, and demonstrated capabilities.

The position is part of a broader salary grade that currently extends up to $130,143 annually. In practical terms, the $85,000 to $95,000 range is where the organization expects to hire for these openings, while the higher grade maximum provides room for salary growth over time through applicable compensation, performance, and organizational processes. The grade maximum is not the expected starting salary or a guarantee of future compensation.

Benefits

Eligible Senate employees receive a comprehensive federal benefits package that may include:

  • Federal Employees Health Benefits
  • Dental, vision, and life insurance options
  • Federal Employees Retirement System pension coverage
  • Thrift Savings Plan retirement savings with employer matching
  • Paid annual and sick leave
  • Paid federal holidays
  • Public-transit subsidy or Senate parking benefits, subject to eligibility
  • Employee Assistance and wellbeing programs
  • Training and professional-development opportunities
  • Potential eligibility for the SAA Student Loan Repayment Program

Schedule and Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site position in Washington, DC.

The work schedule is influenced by Senate operations and may occasionally require early mornings, evenings, late nights, weekends, holidays, or work during inclement weather and government shutdowns. Assignments may arise with limited notice.

The work includes operating and transporting production equipment, standing or walking for extended periods, working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and occasionally working on stages, ladders, or in confined production locations.

This is official, nonpartisan Senate employment. Employees must maintain strict professionalism, confidentiality, political neutrality, and appropriate conduct when working with Senate offices, officials, staff, visitors, and the public.

Application Information

A link to a current video reel or portfolio demonstrating professional filming and editing ability is strongly encouraged.

Applicants must review the complete official vacancy announcement and submit their application through the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms career site. The official announcement controls if any information in this recruiting summary differs from the formal vacancy notice.

The United States Senate Sergeant at Arms is an equal opportunity employer.
