POSITION SUMMARY:
The Principal Video Engineer provides technical leadership for the design, development, and optimization of the imaging and video pipeline powering the AEOS Digital Surgery product line. This role is responsible for delivering low-latency, high-performance surgical visualization through advanced software architecture, GPU-accelerated image processing, and real-time rendering technologies. As the organization's technical expert in medical imaging, the Principal Video Engineer partners across Software, Hardware, and Systems Engineering to develop scalable imaging solutions, integrate advanced visualization capabilities, and drive innovation in digital surgery while ensuring exceptional image quality, system performance, and regulatory compliance.
In this role, you will have the chance to:
  • Define, develop, and optimize the end-to-end video pipeline for the AEOSx Digital Surgery product line, delivering low-latency, high-fidelity surgical visualization and advanced imaging capabilities. This includes color science and image quality optimization.
  • Serve as the technical authority for real-time imaging technologies, driving the architecture and implementation of video acquisition, image processing, rendering, and display systems.
  • Design and develop advanced imaging capabilities, including fluorescence-guided surgery, multi-modal visualization, image enhancement, and integration of perioperative imaging and navigation data.
  • Architect scalable software frameworks supporting camera systems, image signal processing (ISP), calibration, synchronization, and real-time video workflows.
  • Develop high-performance C++ software using object-oriented design, modern C++ standards, and multi-threaded programming techniques for performance-critical applications.
  • Develop and optimize GPU-accelerated algorithms using CUDA and parallel computing techniques to maximize image quality, throughput, and system responsiveness.
  • Design and optimize real-time graphics and visualization pipelines utilizing technologies such as OpenGL, OpenCV, GStreamer, FFmpeg, and industry-standard video codecs.
  • Collaborate with Software, Hardware, and Systems Engineering teams to define imaging requirements, system interfaces, and long-term technology roadmaps.
  • Establish performance benchmarks for latency, throughput, image quality, and system reliability while driving continuous optimization throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Provide technical leadership, architectural guidance, and mentorship to engineering teams while promoting software quality, reusable design, automated testing, and engineering best practices.
  • Support software verification, validation, and regulatory compliance activities for medical imaging systems in accordance with applicable quality and medical device standards.

Essential Requirements:
  • 12+ years of related HW/SW/System experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 10 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 8 years experience; or equivalent experience, including significant experience delivering GPU-based imaging systems.
  • Experience with C++, CUDA, and Object Oriented design and programming
  • Experience developing software for regulated medical devices in accordance with IEC 62304, FDA Design Controls, ISO 13485, and related standards.
  • Experience with version control systems (eg. Git, SVN)
  • Experience with standard programming concepts, best-practices, and procedures
  • Working knowledge of Scrum or other Agile development methodologies
