How does a role in video game publishing typically collaborate with development studios during the production process?

In video game publishing, professionals work closely with development studios to ensure projects stay on schedule, meet quality standards, and align with market expectations. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to discuss milestones, providing feedback on builds, coordinating marketing efforts, and managing budgets. Publishers may also assist with quality assurance testing and localization to prepare the game for different markets. Strong communication and project management skills are crucial, as the publisher acts as a bridge between the creative team and the business side of the industry.

What is video game publishing?

Video game publishing refers to the business side of bringing video games to market. Publishers are responsible for funding, marketing, distribution, and sometimes the development of games. They work with game developers to finalize products, plan release strategies, and ensure games reach their intended audience. In many cases, publishers also handle quality assurance, localization, and legal matters such as licensing and copyright protection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Video Game Publishing, and why are they important?

To thrive in Video Game Publishing, you need a firm grasp of project management, market analysis, business development, and a strong understanding of the gaming industry, often supported by a degree in business, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with product management tools, analytics platforms, and content management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and teamwork skills help professionals build relationships with developers and partners while navigating fast-paced environments. These skills ensure successful game launches, effective go-to-market strategies, and strong partnerships that drive sales and player engagement.

Job description

Who We Are At 2K, we create some of the most iconic and culture-shaping video games in entertainment, including NBA 2K, one of the top-selling franchises in the world, and legendary titles like BioShock, Borderlands, Mafia, Sid Meier's Civilization, and XCOM, as well as fan favorites WWE 2K, TopSpin, and PGA TOUR 2K. We build unforgettable experiences by pushing the boundaries of creativity, authenticity and innovation across every genre.

Our portfolio is brought to life by some of the most influential game development studios in the world. Visual Concepts, Firaxis Games, Hangar 13, Cat Daddy Games, 31st Union, Cloud Chamber, Gearbox, HB Studios, and 2K SportsLab create world-class experiences across platforms.

But what truly powers 2K is our people.

We believe the best ideas come from teams that feel empowered, supported, and inspired. As an equal opportunity employer, we are committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive workplace where people are encouraged to come as they are and do their best work.

What We Need

The Sports Business Unit at 2K is looking for a Publishing Producer to work across our AAA Sports franchises. You will be working across multiple games, both live and in development, as part of the overall Sports Publishing Production team.

We are seeking a proactive, experienced professional with 4-5+ years of game development experience-ideally in AAA or live-service environments-to lead critical publishing operations and end-to-end delivery pipelines. In this role, you will act as "mission control" for game launches, tech integrations, and budget areas, leveraging your deep lifecycle expertise to take features from inception to ship while serving as a strategic bridge of alignment between development teams and cross-functional publishing units.

What You Will Do

Responsibilities in this role could include:

  • Leading the overall game submission process for a AAA game from pre-certification to post-launch, triaging effectively between the development team, QA and Release Management to ensure we ship on time and at quality

  • Acting as "mission control" during game launches, driving internal alignment and clarity across game teams and publishing units, and closing out tactical responses to live game issues.

  • Driving the overall integration of backend / core tech services into in-development games, processing both game team and central technology requirements and ensuring timely delivery of features around our release schedules

  • Designing and running processes for internal game evaluation, incorporating inputs from Publishing and QA to ensure we're delivering consistent and timely feedback to our development teams

  • Converting your deep knowledge of our games into actionable business requirements, ensuring marketing, commercial, and licensing partners understand in-development features and can operate in their roles effectively

  • Managing designated portions of a AAA game budget, such as tracking external development spend or third party porting costs

  • Supporting Publishing Production leadership with preparing material for executive-facing presentations

  • Travel, both domestic and international, may be required

  • Line management of junior Production staff may be required

What Will Make You a Great Fit

  • 4-5+ years experience in internal or external game development, ideally on AAA and/or Live Service games

  • Lived experience of the difference between Publishing and Development Production, either as part of a publishing production team already, or as part of an internal development team with external publisher backing

  • Strong previous experience in project management and production, with a proven ability to take full games (or major features) from inception to ship

  • Deep understanding of the game development lifecycle - you know exactly where games should be at major milestones and can critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of in-development projects

  • Excellent communication skills - you seamlessly adapt your communication style based on your audience, and are comfortable leading everything from 1-1s to group presentations.

  • Strong relationship-building skills - you actively maintain a clear map of internal and external teams, sharing knowledge effectively and instilling confidence in our partners

  • Strong problem solving skills - You are calm and curious under pressure, handling ambiguous development challenges with a structured approach

  • Financially competent - you have experience managing budgets for small games or bespoke areas of large games, and are diligent about resolving budget risks

  • Passion for the gaming market - you can discuss current industry trends with ease and actively apply those learnings to our own games

  • Highly coachable - you proactively seek constructive feedback from peers and operate with a growth mindset

  • "No Ego" approach - you proactively seek constructive feedback, operate with a growth mindset, and believe that when the product succeeds, the whole team wins

What Tools You'll Have Experience With

  • Strong with Google Suite, especially Sheets, Slides and Docs

  • Strong with Microsoft Outlook

  • Experience with Jira

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with golf - both the sport itself and the surrounding culture

  • Experience playing AAA sports or other live service games
