What is video game development?

Video game development is the process of creating interactive digital games for computers, consoles, mobile devices, or other platforms. It involves a combination of disciplines, including programming, art, design, sound, and testing, to bring a concept to life. Game developers work in teams to design gameplay mechanics, create visual and audio assets, write code, and test for bugs. The development process can range from a small indie project to large-scale productions by major studios. Successful video game development requires creativity, technical skill, collaboration, and problem-solving.

How can I get a job as a game developer?

To become a game developer, you should gain proficiency in programming languages such as C++ or C#, develop a strong portfolio of projects, and acquire knowledge of game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. A relevant degree in computer science, game design, or related fields can also improve your chances, along with experience in teamwork and understanding of game development processes.

What jobs are there in video game development?

Video game development offers a variety of roles including game designer, programmer, artist, animator, sound designer, quality assurance tester, and project manager. These roles require skills in programming languages, graphic design, storytelling, and familiarity with development tools like Unity or Unreal Engine. Many positions also require teamwork, creativity, and knowledge of the gaming industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Video Game Development, and why are they important?

To thrive in Video Game Development, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, C#, or Python), a solid understanding of game design principles, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, as well as experience with version control systems such as Git, is highly valuable. Creativity, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and bringing innovative ideas to life. These skills and qualities are crucial for building technically sound, engaging, and successful games in a competitive industry.

How much do video game devs get paid?

Video game developers' salaries vary based on experience, location, and role, but entry-level positions typically start around $50,000 to $70,000 annually, while experienced developers can earn over $100,000. Skills in programming, design, and familiarity with tools like Unity or Unreal Engine can influence compensation.

Will game devs be replaced by AI?

Video game development involves complex creative and technical skills that are difficult for AI to fully replicate. While AI tools can assist with tasks like asset generation and testing, human developers are essential for designing gameplay, storytelling, and making creative decisions. Therefore, game developers are unlikely to be completely replaced by AI in the foreseeable future.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in video game development teams?

Professionals in video game development often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, rapidly changing project requirements, and the need for effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams (designers, programmers, artists, and QA testers). Navigating creative differences while maintaining a unified vision for the game can also be demanding. Adapting to new technologies and tools is a regular part of the job, and strong communication skills are essential to ensure smooth progress and successful project completion.

We changed the game on sports and news production. Now we're looking to change the game again. We are pioneering the future of news, sports, and entertainment in the digital realm.
It's an audacious mission. We're challenging ourselves to be the first to do it - to disrupt the digital entertainment category and redefine the live experience for the next generation.
And we're doing it by starting from scratch. Think of FOX as a start up with the backing of a fortune 500 corporation. You will be part of a new team with full permission to reinvent, disrupt, and build in a highly collaborative and transparent environment.
FOX has always been an advocate for the disruptive spirit. And now we're looking for like-minded people to push the boundaries on what entertainment can mean. Join us to help make the best of sports, news, and entertainment more personal, more immersive, and more interactive than ever before.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Broadcast Reliability Engineer designs, develops, and evolves the intelligent monitoring, automation, and observability platforms that power one of the nation's premier broadcasters. This role is responsible for building highly reliable systems that ensure FOX content is delivered seamlessly across linear broadcast, Video on Demand (VOD), streaming, and emerging media platforms. Working at the intersection of software engineering, cloud infrastructure, and broadcast technology, you'll help shape the future of media operations by leveraging AI-driven observability and advanced automation to improve operational efficiency, accelerate incident response, and enable predictive system reliability. As FOX continues to explore next-generation technologies, including the Media Exchange Layer (MXL) and AI-native operational workflows, you'll have the opportunity to architect solutions that redefine how broadcast systems are monitored, controlled, and optimized at scale.
At FOX, you will have full permission to bring your best tech game to invent and build technology that delivers a high-quality viewer experience to millions across FOX networks, digital platforms, mobile applications, websites, and licensing partnerships.
The way we consume media has fundamentally changed. We watch on our laptops, phones, tablets, and TV. We stream, record and binge. Who knows what we'll do next? You do - because you help build the technology to realize it!
ABOUT YOU
  • You care about your team and their diverse perspectives and are invested in their success
  • You are excited by new technologies and their potential to change how things are done
  • You have an entrepreneur's spirit and enjoy problem solving
  • You LOVE getting stuff done, not just talking about it!

This position supports a 24/7 broadcast operation. While the role is primarily scheduled during daytime hours, flexibility to provide evening or overnight coverage for live events and critical operational activities is expected as needed.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
  • 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and supporting large-scale broadcast, media, or mission-critical technology environments with a focus on reliability, observability, and automation
  • Working knowledge of IP-based broadcast infrastructure (e.g. SMPTE ST 2110, AMWA NMOS, multicast networking, and Precision Time Protocol (PTP))
  • Expert-level experience designing and developing software solutions for broadcast monitoring and control platforms, including protocol development, workflow automation, dashboards, and systems integration using C#, .NET, Python, and modern API technologies (REST, gRPC, SNMP, SOAP, TCP/UDP).
  • Design, architect, and evolve enterprise monitoring, observability, and automation platforms supporting linear broadcast, streaming, cloud, and media production workflows
  • Lead the implementation and optimization of intelligent monitoring solutions that leverage AI/ML techniques for anomaly detection, predictive analytics, event correlation, and operational automation
  • Drive software engineering best practices including source control, CI/CD, automated testing, and code reviews
  • Experience leveraging generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to accelerate software development, operational automation, troubleshooting, knowledge management, and engineering workflows
  • Serve as the senior technical escalation point for complex cross-domain issues impacting live broadcast operations and major live events
  • Architect resilient, highly available broadcast systems with a focus on redundancy, scalability, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery
  • Develop automation and orchestration solutions that reduce operational overhead and improve system reliability across hybrid on-premises and cloud environments
  • Lead technical evaluations, proof-of-concept initiatives, and adoption of emerging technologies in monitoring, observability, automation, and AI-assisted operations
  • Mentor engineers and establish technical standards, documentation, and operational best practices across the Broadcast Reliability organization
  • Partner with Engineering, Operations, Product, and Production teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions
  • Drive continuous improvement through incident management, root cause analysis, reliability engineering practices, and post-incident reviews
  • Participate in on-call rotations and provide technical leadership during high-profile live productions and major broadcast events

NICE TO HAVE, BUT NOT A DEALBREAKER
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field
  • Experience with the Skyline DataMiner platform, including connector development, automation, dashboards, low-code applications, and system integrations
  • Experience designing and operating observability platforms using metrics, logs, traces, telemetry, and event correlation across distributed systems
