What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vice President?

To thrive as a Vice President, you need strategic leadership, business acumen, and significant experience in management, often supported by an advanced degree such as an MBA. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, financial analysis tools, and project management software is typically required. Outstanding communication, decision-making, and negotiation skills help build trust and drive organizational goals across diverse teams. These competencies are essential for effectively steering company direction, fostering growth, and ensuring operational success.

What do vice presidents do?

A vice president is a leader of a company or department in a company who serves under the president or CEO. Their position of senior leadership resembles that of the president. They can speak for the company, sign contracts, and make major decisions. Individual departments also have vice president roles. It is not uncommon for a business to have multiple vice presidents in multiple departments. Each has a specific title and specialty. When larger corporations are split into subsidiaries, there will be a vice president in each division to oversee the organization. For example, a company may have a Vice president of marketing, vice president of human resources, and a vice president of east coast operations all in one location. On the west coast, they’ll have different people with the same title to fulfill those roles.

How does a vice president typically collaborate with other senior leaders to drive organizational success?

As a Vice President, you will work closely with other members of the executive team, such as the CEO, CFO, and department heads, to set strategic goals and ensure alignment across the organization. This often involves participating in regular leadership meetings, contributing to company-wide initiatives, and facilitating cross-departmental communication. Effective collaboration is essential, as you'll need to build consensus, address challenges proactively, and support the professional development of your direct reports. A strong Vice President fosters a culture of transparency and teamwork to help the organization achieve its objectives.

What are vice presidents in a company?

A Vice President (VP) is a senior executive responsible for overseeing specific departments or functions within an organization. VPs typically report directly to the President, CEO, or another top executive, and play a key role in strategic planning, decision-making, and management. Their duties often include leading teams, setting goals, ensuring departmental objectives align with company strategy, and representing the organization to stakeholders. The exact responsibilities can vary depending on the size and structure of the company.

What is the difference between Vice President vs Director?

Vice Presidents typically hold higher leadership roles with broader strategic responsibilities, overseeing multiple departments or divisions. Directors focus on managing specific departments or projects, implementing strategies set by senior leadership. While both roles require significant experience and leadership skills, Vice Presidents are more involved in high-level decision-making and organizational strategy.

Job description

Vice President, Finance

We’re looking for a senior finance leader who is ready to take ownership of the finance function today and grow into a Chief Financial Officer role over time. This is not a role where you’ll simply oversee reports from a distance. You’ll be hands-on with the business, leading the finance function across two companies, strengthening processes, partnering directly with ownership, and helping shape the company’s growth strategy.

What You'll Do
  • Own and elevate finance processes across both companies
  • Lead a reliable, accurate, and timely month-end and year-end close
  • Deliver consolidated financial reporting across multiple entities and divisions
  • Build and manage cash-flow forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis
  • Strengthen financial controls across AP approvals, expenses, AR, and collections
  • Own intercompany accounting and consolidations
  • Develop accurate inventory reporting across 3PL partners
  • Manage U.S. and Canadian tax, remittances, and cross-border payroll
  • Lead the annual engagement review and manage external accountants, auditors, and advisors
  • Act as the primary banking liaison across Canada and the U.S.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the finance team while establishing strong processes and accountability
  • Implement HR policies and oversee hiring, onboarding, and key people processes
  • Partner closely with ownership on strategy, growth initiatives, and overall business performance
  • Continue optimizing and improving the company’s Odoo ERP
What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical finance expertise with leadership, business judgment, and a hands-on mindset.

You'll ideally bring:

  • CPA designation or equivalent, with significant senior-level finance experience
  • Experience leading a finance function and developing a high-performing team
  • Strong month-end close and financial reporting experience; multi-entity experience is an asset
  • Experience with intercompany accounting, consolidations, cash flow, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Experience managing external accountants, auditors, advisors, or annual engagement reviews
  • Experience managing banking relationships and acting as a key liaison with lenders
  • ERP implementation, optimization, or consolidation experience; Odoo experience is an asset
  • U.S. and Canadian cross-border finance experience is a strong advantage
  • Experience implementing HR policies and supporting hiring and people processes
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to connect financial performance to business growth
  • A hands-on, accountable leadership style, someone who can roll up their sleeves when needed
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to remain composed and solutions-oriented under pressure
  • Most importantly, the ambition to grow into a CFO role
Why This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity for a finance leader who wants more than a title. You'll have direct visibility with ownership, meaningful influence on the business, and the opportunity to build and improve the finance function rather than simply maintain it.

You’ll have the chance to:

  • Take ownership of a growing finance function
  • Work directly with ownership on business strategy and performance
  • Make meaningful improvements to processes, systems, and controls
  • Lead and develop a finance team
  • Gain broader exposure across finance, operations, people, and strategy
  • Build the experience and influence needed to step into the CFO seat
Is this the right next step for you?

If you're a senior finance professional who wants to be closer to the business, closer to decision-making, and on a genuine path toward CFO, this could be an exciting opportunity to make your mark. Apply today to start a conversation and learn more about the role and the company.
