A Day in the Life at Custom Alarm

Reports to: Vice-President of Support Services

Hours: Full-Time/M-F/7:30am-4:30pm (roughly)

Location: Southeast Minnesota

Company Size: 70 employees

Pay Range: $30.00 - $55.00 (starting wage is based on a number of considerations including; education, certifications, related experience, etc.)


The Main Responsibilities

Service Technicians apply electrical and electronic theory and related job knowledge to troubleshoot, test, service and repair fire systems and security systems (including intrusion, CCTV, and access control). Conduct day-to-day interactions with customers and coworkers in a manner that exemplifies and supports the Core Values of Custom Alarm.

  • Service fire and security systems, ensuring compliance with standards and codes. Respond to service calls, test systems, and verify proper operation.
  • Assist customers with technical questions about system design, operation, and provide training when needed.
  • Promote system upgrades and enhancements to keep customers informed about the latest technology.
  • Communicate customer account details, including zones, troubles, and system status, with the Customer Experience Center.
  • Document service changes, update diagrams, and submit accurate paperwork and time records after service calls.
  • Maintain and account for assigned tools and inventory. Keep company vehicle clean and well-maintained.
  • Participate in rotating "on-call" schedule for after-hours service.
  • Follow safety regulations and maintenance procedures, suggesting improvements when needed.
  • Attend training to update knowledge, ensure certifications and licenses are current, and track required CEUs.
  • Assist with service and installation tasks as needed.

Requirements

 What We Look For in a Candidate

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Beneficial Education, Experience, and Certifications (not required for consideration)

  • Two-years secondary education, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Power Limited Technician License (PLT)
  • Attain ESA Certified Alarm Tech 1 (CATI)
  • Familiar with residential and commercial building/construction 

Additional Skills and Abilities

  • Positive attitude and eagerness to learn
  • Strong troubleshooting and repair skills
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to use tools/equipment
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal, listening)
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently or in a team

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel (or ability to learn quickly)
  • Strong work ethic and time management skills

Physical Demands

This job requires standing, walking, and occasional sitting during travel. It involves stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders and stairs (up to 50 feet), and lifting/carrying items (up to 100 pounds). Reaching overhead and performing repetitive hand movements are essential. Strong audio, visual, and verbal skills are needed, along with excellent color vision for wiring identification. Daily driving of a company vehicle is required, as well as operating equipment like lifts, drills, and power tools.

Working Conditions

  • Work in various environmental conditions (indoor/outdoor, dust, noise, heat/cold)
  • Occasional after-hours work and out-of-town travel required
