Job description

# VP of EngineeringEngineeringRemote (US)Full-timePHP 8.4Symfony 7API PlatformPostgreSQLReactTypeScriptNext.jsAI-Assisted Development### The RoleWe're hiring a VP of Engineering to own all of engineering at 10X ERP: the core ERP platform (PHP 8.4, Symfony 7, API Platform, PostgreSQL) and our Next.js platform, which includes our B2B/B2C e-commerce storefront and our client hub. Today that is a team of six to nine engineers, and growing it is part of the job: you will assess what we need and lead the hiring. You report day to day to our COO and work closely with our CEO.This is a player-coach role, not an executive seat. At our current size there is no staff layer between you and the work. You review merge requests weekly, ship code occasionally, and stay close enough to the codebase to make technical calls with confidence. If you are looking for a role where you set strategy and hand it to directors, this is not that role.Your first job is to stabilize and take ownership of a working team during a key period in our growth. Meeting cadences, workflows, issue labeling, and maintenance plans exist today; the mandate is to own them, assess them, and improve them, not to invent them from scratch. Your lasting job is to build an engineering culture that delivers excellent work on tight timelines, scales with the team you hire, and holds up over the long run.### The Platform10X ERP is a modern, cloud-native ERP for small and mid-market distributors: fasteners, o-rings and seals, industrial MRO, plumbing and PVF, electrical, HVAC, and similar. We help distributors running on decades-old legacy systems compete like companies ten times their size, with full inventory, quote-to-cash, purchasing, accounting, and an AI layer that is part of the product rather than bolted on.We are self-funded and built deliberately. The platform was built from scratch starting in 2021, has been in production since 2023, and today runs the daily operations of 23 live distributors across the country, with 17 more signed and working through onboarding. The core is Symfony 7 and API Platform on PostgreSQL with a React and TypeScript frontend; the storefront and client hub are Next.js. The work is challenging and very high impact: general ledger and AR/AP, inventory costing, tax, pricing, EDI, and hand-built data migrations off more than a dozen legacy ERPs.### What You Will Own* **The team's environment.** Stability with the right kind of pressure: the positive kind that fuels creativity and excellence, without the negative stress that gets in the way of both. Recognition is consistent and public, criticism is direct and private, and growth is actively encouraged. Engineers should feel the challenge of the work, not the weight of it.* **Assessment and stabilization.** An honest assessment of the stack in your first 30 days, followed by a full gaps report covering both technology (security, performance, reliability) and workflow (issue creation, scoping, delivery and QA, merge and feedback loops).* **Continuity of the core platform.** Make sure the critical system knowledge lives in documentation and in more than one head, and keep the delivery schedule intact while the team grows.* **Delivery and launch capacity.** Own the plan, staffing, and tooling that take us to a sustained four client launches a month, and keep feature work protected from launch firefighting.* **Hiring.** Assess personnel needs against the next six months of delivery for both core ERP and e-commerce, then lead hiring and onboarding for both.* **AI development practice.** Set the team's AI policy, including rules for AI-generated merge requests against the core codebase, and give AI-harness work dedicated sprint time instead of piling it on top of a full load. Stability first: a deliberate rollout beats a fast one.* **A maintenance rhythm.** Sentry reviews, AI-assisted code reviews, e-commerce upkeep, and the debt list, addressed consistently rather than in bursts.* **Cadence and communication.** Own standups and engineering meetings, join work-planning with Support and the COO, attend weekly leadership meetings, and translate all of it into one consistent vision for the team.### Who You Are* You have led engineering at a small-team SaaS company, roughly 5 to 15 engineers, on a fast release cadence. Enterprise program management is not the background we are hiring for.* PHP and Symfony strongly preferred. The core app is Symfony 7 and API Platform on PHP 8.4, and you will be making technical calls in it from week one.* Deep PostgreSQL literacy: views, functions, raw SQL, and query performance on large production datasets.* Comfortable in React and TypeScript, and in Next.js for the storefront and hub. You will own the frontend upgrade path in the core app.* ERP, distribution, logistics, or inventory-management experience strongly preferred. The product runs our clients' operations end to end, from the warehouse floor through deeply integrated financial controls.* You use AI coding tools like Claude Code daily and have set team-level AI development practices, not just personal ones. You model continuous learning at every level, including your own: AI is moving too fast for anyone to coast on what worked before, so we adopt new technology early and never get complacent.* You lead up and shield down. You manage up with awareness of C-level personalities, keep leadership debates and metrics out of daily team culture, and absorb the negative rather than passing it along. You own mistakes, including other people's. Negative stress and difficulty are part of the leader's job to carry.* You connect the team to the mission. You instill a sense of company over "project": shared pride in what we're building, what it does for our clients, and what it changes in their communities and beyond. You keep the "why" visible by relaying client wins, feature feedback, and successful launches back to the engineers who made them happen.* You know what each developer needs to feel accomplished, and you shape reviews, workflows, and plans around real people rather than a process diagram.### Why This Role* **Real product, real customers.** Distributors run their entire business on this platform. When you ship, someone's warehouse works better on Monday.* **Small team, real ownership.** No layers, no committee. You will have more influence over the product and the team than a VP title usually implies.* **Self-funded.** No investors, no board, no vanity metrics. Our only obligation is to our customers.* **AI is how we work.** It is in the product and in how the team builds. You will own where that goes next.* **Hard problems worth solving.** Accounting correctness, inventory costing, EDI, and migrations off legacy systems that were never designed to let anyone leave.### Details* Full-time, fully remote, and US-based* Travel to our Houston, TX headquarters to meet with the CEO and COO every few months, especially in the first year* Reports to the COO day to day, with frequent, often ad-hoc conversations with the CEO. You align CEO-sparked ideas with the COO before implementation, so nothing reaches the team with the co-founders out of sync* Competitive compensation, discussed early in the process, and full benefits* Target start: as soon as you can. We are moving quickly on this hire and would like someone in the seat in August; for the right person, we will work around a notice period### How to ApplyTo be considered, please record a quick Loom video (60 seconds or less) introducing yourself, your relevant experience, and why you're interested in this role. Paste the link in the "Loom Video URL" field below. Applications without a video will not be reviewed. No formal script needed. Just be yourself. We want to see who we'd be working with. #J-18808-Ljbffr
