Department Purpose:
To oversee the execution of the Duke Health Affiliations & Networks Strategic plan including growth strategies for expansion of Duke Health's presence in local, regional and national markets by leading efforts to establish and operationalize affiliated programs with healthcare organizations that foster opportunities for clinical collaboration for patient care, research and education, including but not limited to specialty/subspecialty affiliations and the Duke LifePoint joint venture., creating
Division Responsibilities
The division of acute care affiliations and support services within Duke Health Affiliations & Networks (DHAN) oversees the teams that provide specialty/subspecialty programmatic advisory services to affiliated healthcare organizations to expand the care delivered locally in the communities in order to support the expansion of quality-driven specialty care in communities while protecting the Duke Brand, facilitate care coordination for tertiary/quaternary care that cannot be managed in the geographically appropriate community setting and generate funds that support DUHS academic and clinical missions.These efforts also include but are not limited to facilitating the development of new specialty/subspecialty affiliations and assisting the DHAN Vice President in managing the business relationship and operations of the Duke LifePoint joint venture with Lifepoint.
Affiliation Development: In collaborations with Duke Health specialty/service line and business leaders, inform and execute on the strategic direction by overseeing efforts to establish programmatic specialty affiliations and clinical joint venture relationships with like-minded partners in the local, regional and national markets.
Network Operations: To set strategic direction and oversee the operations within acute-care based affiliations and centralized business operations divisions within DHAN.
Acute-care Specialty/Subspecialty Affiliations: Oversee the Networks providing programmatic, research and clinical affiliations including, but not limited to:
  • Specialty/subspecialty affiliations networks and outreach including:
    • Established Specialty/Subspecialty Networks in cancer, heart, telestroke, Tele-ID
    • Development and oversight of emerging/new specialty/subspecialty affiliations
  • Provider Relations for Duke providers at DHAN affiliated sites

Duke LifePoint Business Operations
  • Oversee the Duke LifePoint Healthcare joint venture to ensure alignment with Duke Health's mission and quality and patient safety goals in protection of the Duke brand and associated reputation
  • Serve as Duke Representative to one of the 13 Duke LifePoint Boards of Trustees as assigned

Job Responsibilities:
  1. Planning
    1. In conjunction with the Asst VP for the Cancer Network, and Sr. Directors for Heart and Subspecialties, develop, monitor and oversee execution of Network strategy as outlined in the Duke Health and CSU specific strategic plans including:
      1. Identifying opportunities to expand affiliations throughout the local, regional, and as appropriate, the national markets.
      2. Support the mission of Duke Health through identification of opportunities to provide education and research activities in appropriate affiliated sites throughout the United States.
    2. In conjunction with the Director of Affiliate Provider Relations, ensure alignment with Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP) leadership to support the deployment, oversight, and performance of Duke physicians and APPs practicing at DHAN affiliated sites
    3. In conjunction with the Director, Centralized Business Operations and Strategy, oversee DHAN's centralized Business Operations shared services team, ensuring consistent, efficient delivery of finance, HR coordination, fleet, IT, and back-office support while standardizing workflows and strengthening operational performance across the network
    4. Support the VP of DHAN in representing Duke Health's interests in the Duke LifePoint joint venture to achieve Duke Health's strategic initiatives.

  1. Operations Management.The Associate Vice President is ultimately accountable for:
      1. The daily operations of the Division of Acute Care Affiliations and Centralized Business Operations including services to affiliate sites consistent with contractual agreements.
      2. Oversight of the marketing and review process for all affiliate sites with contractual approval for Use of Duke Brand, working closely with Duke Health Marketing & Communications.
      3. Oversight of DHAN Centralized Business Operations responsible for billing and accounts receivable process for all DHAN operational and licensing fees
      4. Personnel and HR-related issues including liaison with assigned HR Business Partner

  1. Relationship Management:In coordination with the Vice President, and the Chief Medical Officer, responsible for forming and maintaining relationships with administrators, medical staff leadership and/or trustees in affiliate organizations.

  1. Personnel Supervision:The Associate Vice President is ultimately accountable for the direct supervision of the leaders of the Specialty/Subspecialty Affiliations Networks/teams, Provider Relations and Centralized Business Operations (including dept-specific personnel and HR functions). AVP has dotted line oversight of Marketing and Communications processes related to licensing of the Duke Name to DHAN affiliates.
  2. Research, Education and Quality Management: The Associate Vice President will ensure that a comprehensive education agenda is included in all DHAN specialty/subspecialty affiliated programs, and clinical research as appropriate in accordance with contractual obligations. Ensures specialty affiliations generate measurable educational, research, and quality outcomes while supporting Duke Health's academic mission and reputation.

  1. Performance Monitoring and Reporting:The Associate Vice President will ensure monitoring of the performance of network activities within the division of acute care affiliations and centralized business operations including the development and issuance of timely reports.Such reports will be provided to Duke Health senior leaders, and affiliated sites as needed.

7.Coordinating Relationships:
In order to fulfill the responsibilities set forth above, the Associate Vice President should maintain open communication with leaders of the following programs: Duke University School of Medicine, Duke Health Acute Care and Ambulatory facilities, DHIP, Health System Finance Dept, DUH Service Lines, Managed Care Contracting, Strategy & Planning, Marketing & Communications, Development Office, Risk Management, Legal Services,Continuing Medical and Graduate Medical Education, Patient Revenue Management Organization(PRMO), and others as appropriate.
Incumbent will serve as role model and resource for professional colleagues, and will participate in leadership activities such as committees, professional organizations, publishing, teaching and research.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education: Education: Master's degree in a related field is required, healthcare concentration strongly preferred
Experience: Work requires a minimum of five years' experience in hospital operations including at least three years at the administrative leadership level
  1. Ability to lead effectively in a matrixed organization with high collaboration, sound judgment, and significant operational experience
  2. Strong leadership, management, analytical, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
  3. Knowledge of physician practice management, clinical operations, research practice, and healthcare payment systems, with sound financial management
  4. Motivation and initiative in pursuing professional growth
  5. Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations
  6. Ability to assess situations and implement improvement or corrective actions
  7. Skill in influencing opinions, attitudes, and decisions across diverse stakeholders
  8. Ability to make data-driven decisions
  9. Strong oral and written communication skills for diverse audiences
  10. Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals in multiple settings, promoting workplace belonging and inclusiveness
  11. Ability to travel in support of new and existing affiliated sites (Local, regional, and national travel is required)
