We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a VP, Human Resources (Hybrid) on our Human Resources team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.
This role will is leader in the Human Resources team with responsibility for providing all HR-related services to the AMA Senior Management Group (SMG) and AMA workforce. The Vice President will become figuratively embedded with the SMG as a quasi 'business partner'; aware of management needs and able to anticipate solutions. The Vice President will also oversee organization-wide recruitment, performance management, employee relations and EEO compliance. The Vice President will see that the HR team meets the SMG's needs as the AMA pursues new strategic goals and expands into new business lines; strengthening and optimizing the performance and effectiveness of AMA staff.
This role has primary accountability for the performance of an AMA sub-function or key area within a business unit. This role develops and executes sub-function and business unit strategy/vision and influences the allocation of resources across multiple sub-functions or business units.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
HR Business Partnering
  • As HR's liaison to the SMG, the VP HR will become familiar with the SMG's business plans and strategies to provide all HR-related services as needed or as anticipated.
  • Proactively provides guidance and advice and is a resource to brainstorm organizational, employee or other staffing issues.
  • The VP HR will oversee a staff of Human Resources Generalists/Business Partners who will collaborate across HR functions (Compensation, Benefits/Wellness, and OD&L) and non-HR functions (Finance, OGC and external resources) to arrive at positive solutions to HR issues for assigned clients.
  • The VP HR develops best practices and coaches HR Generalists to instill and maintain a value-added business partner mindset in working with assigned client group.
  • The Generalists oversee a wide range of HR services to support the success of their groups' objectives and goals.
  • Leads the HR components of small and large reorganizational or other projects, overseeing the project team of HR specialists as necessary.
  • Provides direct support for client group(s), assigns client groups to HR Generalist and provides back-up.

Talent Acquisition
  • Leads the AMA recruiting functions including assessment, team management, sourcing and search firm (contingent and retained) selection for all positions at the Vice Presidential level and below.
  • Lead or co-lead recruiting for Group Vice Presidents and Vice President.
  • Oversee the design and execution of the overall talent strategy to attract, hire, and retain high-caliber staff.
  • Enhance recruitment infrastructure, such as Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), reducing dependency on external agencies, and optimizing sourcing spend.
  • Work with HR leadership and hiring managers to forecast needs and improve candidate experience.

Employee Relations and Employment Compliance
  • Leads the AMA's employee relations and employment compliance functions. Provides expertise and makes decisions in resolving more complex issues. Primary interface with Office of General Counsel on employee related issues.
  • Develops metrics to track effectiveness of HR results individually and as a group. Uses the metrics to implement process improvements, identify gaps, determine solutions (work flow, training, etc.).
  • Oversees the maintenance of manual and electronic documents, files and records for the purpose of providing accurate information in compliance with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
  • Develops and maintains HR policies and processes to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and support organizational goals and objectives.
  • Ensures compliance with state, federal, and local regulations.

Staff Management
  • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for staff.
  • Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employee performance, and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Responsible for developing staff knowledge and skills to support career development.

REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Bachelor's degree required, master's degree strongly preferred
  2. 15+ years of experience in Human Resources; Certification as an HR Professional preferred.
  3. Deep experience as a strategic HR Business Partner, including employee relations, staffing and counseling
  4. 10+ years experience in people management required; able to attract and develop talent.
  5. Deep knowledge and application of employment law.
  6. Proven experience coaching and counseling senior executive level leaders.
  7. Demonstrated experience managing large projects such as reorganizations or downsizings.
  8. Proven knowledge of talent acquisition strategies and processes; experience selecting and managing retained and contingency search firms.
  9. Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, including proven ability to interact with all levels of staff and management.
  10. Prior exposure to all facets of HR; able to bring credibility to the human resources function through their professional qualifications, leadership and ability to influence and collaborate at the most senior levels of a large-scale, complex organization. Experience/working knowledge in the following HR fields required to communicate effectively with leadership:
    o Benefits including wellness programs
    o Compensation including compensation philosophy and job evaluation
    o Impact and inclusion initiatives and programs
    o OD&L aligned with performance management
    o Workforce analytics and HR technology
  11. Excellent judgment, decisiveness and problem-solving skills.
  12. Demonstrated success in change management and an understanding of what is required to succeed in a dynamic environment with an appreciation for the mission, traditions, and culture of the institution.
  13. Highly results-oriented

The American Medical Association is located at 330 N. Wabash Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611 and is convenient to all public transportation in Chicago.
This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $239,292 - $310,000. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
