Senior Safety Manager – Bay Area (General Contractor)

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, CA Reports to: VP of Safety / Regional Operations Leadership Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role

Our client, a well-established General Contractor with an active portfolio across the Bay Area, is seeking a Senior Safety Manager to lead site safety strategy, compliance, and culture across a growing slate of commercial, institutional, and public works projects. This role is ideal for a safety leader who wants ownership over a region's safety program and a seat at the table with senior operations leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of site-specific safety plans across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Conduct regular jobsite audits, inspections, and safety walks; identify hazards and drive corrective action.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and all applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Investigate incidents, near-misses, and injuries; lead root-cause analysis and corrective action planning.
  • Partner with project executives, superintendents, and project managers to embed safety into daily field operations.
  • Deliver safety training and toolbox talks for field staff, subcontractors, and new hires.
  • Own subcontractor safety prequalification, onboarding, and ongoing compliance monitoring.
  • Track and report leading and lagging safety metrics (TRIR, EMR, near-miss rates) to executive leadership.
  • Lead emergency response planning and serve as primary point of contact during incidents.
  • Support pursuit and proposal teams with safety program content for client interviews and RFPs.
  • Mentor and develop site-level safety staff and field safety coordinators.
  • Stay current on evolving Cal/OSHA regulations, industry best practices, and emerging jobsite technology (e.g., wearables, AI-based hazard detection).

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of construction safety experience, including significant time in a senior or regional safety role.
  • Deep knowledge of Cal/OSHA regulations and Bay Area jurisdictional requirements.
  • Experience across commercial, institutional, and/or public works project types (K-12/public agency experience a plus).
  • CHST, CSP, or equivalent safety certification strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead safety programs across multiple concurrent, large-scale projects.
  • Strong track record improving safety metrics (TRIR, EMR) and building a proactive safety culture.
  • Excellent communication skills — comfortable engaging field crews, subcontractors, and executive leadership alike.
  • Experience with safety management software (e.g., Procore, SafetyCulture/iAuditor, or similar).
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).

What's On Offer

  • Regional ownership of safety strategy with direct executive visibility
  • Competitive base salary + performance bonus
  • Full benefits package (medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match)
  • Vehicle allowance / mileage reimbursement
  • Strong internal growth path toward VP of Safety or Corporate Safety Director
