What are VFX internships?

VFX internships are short-term training positions within visual effects (VFX) studios or departments, designed to give students or recent graduates hands-on experience in the VFX industry. Interns typically assist with tasks such as compositing, 3D modeling, animation, rotoscoping, and other post-production processes under the guidance of experienced artists. These internships help interns build practical skills, expand their portfolios, and make valuable industry connections, often serving as a stepping stone to entry-level positions in VFX.

What can I expect from the mentorship and feedback process during a VFX internship?

As a VFX intern, you can typically expect to work closely with experienced artists and supervisors who provide regular feedback on your work. Most studios foster a collaborative environment where interns are encouraged to ask questions and participate in team meetings or dailies, offering valuable insights into the production pipeline. Mentorship often includes hands-on guidance, portfolio reviews, and opportunities to learn industry-standard software. This supportive structure helps interns quickly develop their technical and creative skills while gaining a clearer understanding of career paths in visual effects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VFX Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VFX Intern, you typically need a foundational understanding of visual effects principles, basic animation, and a relevant educational background in fields like animation, film, or computer graphics. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Maya, and Nuke, as well as a strong portfolio, are highly valued. Creativity, attention to detail, teamwork, and a willingness to learn help interns stand out in collaborative and fast-paced studio environments. These skills and qualities are essential for producing high-quality visual effects and adapting quickly to the demands of professional VFX production.

Responsibilities:
• Build scoped 3D/XR features in Unity or StereoKit under technical guidance.

• Help build companion app and tooling components in Java/Kotlin or Python.
• Work with 3D content from artists or vendors — importing models, textures, animations.
• Pair with senior engineers on native C++ work or platform integration.
Qualifications:
Required:
• 1-3 years of professional experience, OR a strong portfolio of shipped XR or real-time 3D work (academic, internship, hackathon, side projects, games).
• BS in CS, CE, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
• Proficient in C# OR C++. Experience with Unity OR StereoKit (or another 3D engine).
• Familiarity with at least one XR runtime or SDK (OpenXR, Quest, HoloLens, ARCore).
• Comfortable importing and working with 3D assets in Unity or a similar engine.
• Working knowledge of Git in a multi-developer workflow.
• Comfortable digging through unfamiliar hardware, docs, and source.
• Curiosity about XR, embedded systems, or real-time graphics.
Preferred:
• Both C# and C++. Experience with both Unity and StereoKit.

• Performance profiling experience (CPU/GPU/memory).
• Computer vision, perception, or AI/ML coursework or projects.
• Shipped features in a games, VFX, simulation, or XR studio context.
