What is veterinary toxicology?

A Veterinary Toxicology job involves studying the effects of toxins, chemicals, and other harmful substances on animals. Professionals in this field assess risks, diagnose poisonings, and develop treatment plans for affected animals. They may work in research, regulatory agencies, agriculture, or pharmaceutical companies to ensure animal and public safety. Their expertise helps prevent toxic exposures and contributes to the safe use of medications, pesticides, and environmental chemicals.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a veterinary toxicologist?

As a veterinary toxicologist, your typical day might include analyzing biological samples for evidence of toxic substances, consulting with veterinarians and clients about poisoning cases, and preparing detailed reports of your findings. You may also research new toxins, participate in case reviews, and advise on treatment or preventative measures for animals exposed to hazardous chemicals. Collaboration with lab technicians, veterinarians, and regulatory agencies is common in this role. The work environment can vary from laboratory settings to academic or research institutions, depending on your employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in veterinary toxicology?

Excelling in veterinary toxicology requires a strong background in veterinary medicine, pharmacology, and biochemistry, usually with a DVM degree and specialized training or board certification in toxicology. Familiarity with laboratory diagnostic tools, analytical equipment such as mass spectrometry, and regulatory databases is also important. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are essential for investigating cases and reporting findings. These competencies are crucial for accurately identifying toxic exposures, providing expert recommendations, and ensuring animal and human safety.

Job description

Description
Position at HousePaws Mobile Veterinary Service Mount Laurel
Surgical Rockstar Wanted!
Veterinary Technician - Surgery
Location: Morrisville, PA
Schedule: 4-day work week - more time for you, less burnout for all!
Are you an experienced veterinary technician who lives for the OR? Does monitoring anesthesia make you feel more focused than your morning coffee? If you're passionate about surgery, love a fast-paced environment, and want to be part of a collaborative and compassionate team - you might be exactly who we're looking for!
At HousePaws Morrisville, we do things a little differently. We started as a mobile practice and grew into a full-service hospital because our clients (and their pets!) couldn't get enough of us. Now we offer top-notch traditional and integrative medicine, from surgeries and dental care to acupuncture and chiropractic services.
The Role:
You'll be the right-hand person to our veterinarians during surgery - monitoring anesthesia, prepping patients, assisting in procedures, and making sure every furry patient is comfortable, safe, and well cared for. You'll also put your skills to use with:
  • Pain management & patient recovery
  • IV catheter placement & venipuncture
  • Surgical prep & instrument sterilization
  • Dental cleanings & radiology
  • Pre- and post-op client communication
What We're Looking For:
  • At least 2 years of veterinary technician experience (surgery experience a big plus!)
  • Skilled with anesthesia and surgical monitoring
  • Confident, calm, and compassionate - especially during surgical discharges
  • A team player who brings positive vibes and supports their crew
  • Someone who loves learning, sharing knowledge, and advocating for pets
Why You'll Love Working Here:
  • A consistent 4-day work week - long weekends, anyone?
  • A team that actually supports each other (no toxic vibes here)
  • Use all your skills and continue growing in a collaborative setting
  • Be part of an award-winning, forward-thinking hospital that values YOU
Benefits That Go Beyond the Basics:
  • Short-Term Disability & Life Insurance - 100% paid by us
  • Medical, dental, and vision options (including 100% paid dental premium!)
  • 401K with generous company match
  • Paid time off - vacation, personal, sick days - all covered
  • Fertility & family planning support (up to $30k!)
  • Mental health support, physical therapy, and digital wellness programs
  • Team member discounts for your own pets
  • DailyPay - access your earnings anytime
  • And yes, we're LGBTQIA+ inclusive and proud of it
