Relief ER/ICU Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Medical Assistant
Durham, North Carolina

The Triangle's premier Emergency and Specialty Hospitals are growing! We are looking for highly motivated, highly skilled individuals to join the team at our Durham, NC location. We provide 24-hour emergency service and specialty referrals in surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, radiology and rehabilitation and we're looking for technicians who want to utilize their skills to the fullest potential in a fast paced, fun, and stimulating environment.
We are currently seeking qualified technicians and Veterinary Medical Assistants for relief positions with our ER/ICU service. These roles function with a great deal of autonomy and responsibility; solid technical skills, sound judgment, excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to work both independently and with a team are required.
Essential Job Duties
• Provide nursing care to critically ill hospitalized patients in conjunction with specialty and emergency veterinarians
• Participate in nurse rounds
• Triage incoming patients presenting on emergency
• Assess patient stability and obtain patient vital signs
• Perform diagnostics and treatments of emergency and hospitalized patients
• Perform hourly patient assessment and monitoring
• Observe patients and recognize changes in status
• Place peripheral and central catheters
• Restrain patients for exams and treatments
• Set up and administer IV and SQ fluids
• Maintain urinary catheters
• Bandage removal and application
• Perform suture and drain removal
• Perform drug dose calculations for injectable medications and CRIs
• Administer injectable medications (IV, IM, SQ)
• Administer other medications (PO, OU, OD)
• Maintain isolation protocols for infectious patients
• Basic wound cleaning and care
• Administer injectable and inhalant anesthesia
• Monitor patients while under anesthesia and maintain a monitoring log
• Monitor patients during recovery from anesthesia
• Obtain samples for and perform in house laboratory testing
• Assist in CPR
Required Education and Experience
• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
• 2+ years professional veterinary experience, GP experience is accepted
Preferred Education/Experience
• Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology, Biology, Animal Science or similar
