Job description

Animal Emergency & Specialty Center of Knoxville is seeking a skilled and compassionate Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) to join our Oncology Department. This role is ideal for technicians who are passionate about veterinary oncology, internal medicine, and complex case management, and who find purpose in supporting patients and families through long-term treatment journeys.

As an Oncology Veterinary Technician, you will work closely with board-certified veterinary specialists, assisting with advanced cancer diagnostics, chemotherapy administration, patient monitoring, and client education. This position offers the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with patients and their families while practicing advanced veterinary nursing skills in a specialty environment.

Schedule (some flexibility)
  • Full-Time Position
    Tuesday - Friday | 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM
  • 4-day work week (10-hour shifts)
  • No overnight shifts
  • No on-call requirements

Oncology Treatments & Diagnostics
  • Assist with oncology diagnostics and cancer staging procedures
  • Prepare, calculate, and administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments following strict safety protocol
  • Monitor patients during and after chemotherapy infusions
  • Support advanced diagnostics including imaging, biopsies, and cytology
Patient Monitoring & Advanced Nursing Care
  • Provide advanced nursing care for oncology patients, including pain management and supportive therapies
  • Monitor and document patient responses to chemotherapy and medical treatments
    Administer IV fluids, medications, and therapeutic treatments
  • Assist with patient recovery and comfort during treatment
Client Communication & Education
  • Educate clients on chemotherapy protocols, potential side effects, home care, and follow-up schedules
  • Provide compassionate guidance to families navigating complex medical diagnoses
  • Partner with veterinarians to ensure clear and empathetic communication throughout treatment plans
Team Collaboration & Case Management
  • Collaborate with Oncology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Emergency teams
  • Participate in case rounds and specialty consultations
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records
Oncology Safety & Equipment
  • Maintain strict chemotherapy safety standards and PPE protocols
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemotherapy medications
  • Maintain oncology treatment areas and specialized equipment
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT, RVT, or CVT) required or eligible for licensure
  • Experience in veterinary oncology, specialty medicine, ER, or internal medicine preferred
  • Experience with chemotherapy administration or critical care nursing is a plus
  • Strong patient monitoring and clinical assessment skills
  • Excellent communication and client education abilities
  • Ability to work in a collaborative specialty hospital environment
