What is a veterinary internship?

A veterinary internship is a temporary, hands-on training program for recent veterinary graduates or students seeking practical experience in a clinical or research setting. Interns work under the supervision of licensed veterinarians, assisting with patient care, medical procedures, and diagnostics. These internships help develop clinical skills, expand knowledge, and provide networking opportunities for future employment or specialization. Programs typically last 1 year and may be in private practices, universities, or specialty hospitals.

What types of responsibilities can I expect during a veterinary internship?

During a veterinary internship, you can expect hands-on involvement in animal care, including assisting with examinations, administering medications, preparing animals for surgery, and performing basic laboratory tests. Interns often shadow experienced veterinarians, observe procedures, and participate in client communication to gain practical exposure to the field. You may also help with maintaining medical records, ensuring cleanliness of workspaces, and participating in team meetings or case rounds. These tasks provide valuable real-world experience, making internships an important stepping stone for pursuing a veterinary career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a veterinary internship?

Veterinary internships require a foundational knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of a veterinary degree program. Interns often use diagnostic imaging equipment, laboratory testing tools, and medical record systems, as well as hold up-to-date rabies vaccinations and insurance. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate compassionately with pet owners and veterinary staff are essential soft skills. These competencies are vital for delivering safe, effective care and for learning in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Are veterinary internships worth it?

Veterinary internships provide hands-on experience, skill development, and industry exposure that can enhance a veterinary career. They often include mentorship, practical training, and networking opportunities, making them valuable for gaining real-world knowledge and improving job prospects after graduation.

How do veterinary internships work?

Veterinary internships are structured programs that provide hands-on experience in veterinary clinics, hospitals, or research facilities. Interns typically work under supervision, assisting with patient care, diagnostics, and treatments, often gaining skills needed for veterinary licensure. These internships usually last several months and may require prior veterinary coursework or certification.

How to get a veterinary internship?

To secure a veterinary internship, applicants should have completed relevant coursework in animal science or veterinary medicine and demonstrate strong communication and animal handling skills. Applying through veterinary schools, animal hospitals, or research programs, and preparing a professional resume and cover letter, can improve chances. Some internships require background checks or immunizations before starting.

Job description

Description

Thrive Pet Healthcare offers ER Academy - a 1-Year, emergency medicine-focused internship designed for new graduates. Our goal is to provide training encompassing high-quality emergency care and client communication, in addition providing the tools needed for a long & successful career in emergency medicine. Candidates must be currently eligible to obtain a veterinary license in the United States.
Interns are scheduled with a senior veterinarian committed to your mentorship. This allows for the presentation of cases and feedback as you are seeing patients. You will also have primary case responsibility within the 1st month and will be cutting surgical cases as your experience develops. Thrive hospitals offering this Internship starting June 2027 include:

  • South Carolina Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Care - Columbia, SC

This collaboration allows for improved continuing education through journal clubs, grand rounds, case rounds as well as a larger community of interns.
By the end of the internship year, you will be well-versed in most emergency medicine presentations and be proficient in typical ER skills, procedures, and surgeries. At completion of the internship, you will be highly marketable and capable of comfortably going into any emergency veterinary facility with the tools needed to succeed

Interns are integral to the hospital team and can expect to work most weekends and holidays to maximize their internship experience. You are scheduled on shift with a senior clinician dedicated to mentoring and ensuring your success while allowing you to be an independent doctor. The program features phased oversight, with no shifts working alone for at least the first six months.
You will be supervised in surgery with the goal of being competent in emergency soft tissue surgeries such as C-sections, pyometra, gastrotomies, enterotomies, R&As, GDV/gastropexies, splenectomies, cystotomies, and sometimes amputations.
