What is a Veterinary Forensic job?

A Veterinary Forensic job involves applying veterinary medicine and forensic science to investigate cases of animal abuse, neglect, and crimes involving animals. Professionals in this field examine evidence, conduct necropsies, and collaborate with law enforcement to build legal cases. They may work with shelters, law enforcement agencies, or forensic laboratories to ensure justice for animals. Their expertise helps in identifying signs of trauma, poisoning, or malnutrition, contributing to animal welfare and criminal investigations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Veterinary Forensic position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Veterinary Forensic professional, you need a veterinary degree (DVM or VMD), in-depth knowledge of animal anatomy and pathology, and specialized training in forensic science. Familiarity with laboratory diagnostic tools, evidence collection methods, and sometimes certification in veterinary forensics are valuable assets. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and clear communication are crucial for effective collaboration with law enforcement and legal teams. These abilities are essential to accurately investigate animal abuse cases, provide expert testimony, and ensure legal standards are upheld.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Veterinary Forensic professional on a daily basis?

A Veterinary Forensic professional is typically responsible for examining evidence in cases of suspected animal cruelty, conducting necropsies, collecting and preserving forensic samples, and documenting findings through detailed reports. They often collaborate closely with law enforcement, animal welfare organizations, and attorneys, sometimes providing expert testimony in court. The work may involve responding to crime scenes, performing laboratory analyses, and consulting on interpretation of animal injuries. This role combines veterinary expertise with meticulous investigative work, making each day varied and intellectually challenging.

More than 6,700 full-time students are enrolled in graduate programs in veterinary medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nurse anesthesia, cardiovascular perfusion, podiatry, optometry, clinical psychology, speech language pathology, graduate nursing, and biomedical sciences. Over 500 full-time faculty members and 400 staff members are dedicated to the education and development of our students in an environment that encourages learning, respect for all members of the health care team, service, interdisciplinary scholarly activity, and personal growth. The addition of veterinary medicine on the Glendale campus provides an excellent opportunity to train students following the principles of One Health at Arizona's first veterinary college. The CVM received full accreditation by the AVMA Council on Education in September of 2018.
The College of Veterinary Medicine is housed in Cactus Wren Hall and in the Animal Health Institute. Cactus Wren Hall is a new facility with ample classrooms, teaching laboratories, research laboratories, conference rooms, and offices. The Animal Health Institute is comprised of The Companion Animal Clinic, The Large Animal Clinic, and The Diagnostic Pathology Center. The Companion Animal Clinic is a modern and innovative veterinary hospital for small animals. The 110,000 sq. ft. building contains state-of-the-art medical, surgical, internal medicine, dental, and urgent care facilities. In addition to outstanding clinical facilities and equipment, the Companion Animal Clinic houses a pharmacy, a large and well-equipped surgery teaching laboratory, simulated examination rooms for clinical communications training using standardized clients/patients, and ample conference and small-group meeting rooms. Adjacent to the Companion Animal Clinic is the Large Animal Clinic, which houses large animal teaching and treatment facilities, and small herds of cattle and horses. The Diagnostic Pathology Center offers a full range of anatomical pathology and forensic pathology services and contains ample teaching spaces.
Our team is looking for a faculty member that is a lifelong learner that thrives in a positive environment where the next generation of veterinarians are being trained. Our mission is to improve animal and human life through innovative veterinary education and state of the art health care services. Therefore, we are seeking a faculty member with strong interests in teaching and who is excited about participating in the growth of our veterinary college and having a role in shaping its teaching and clinical programs. While independent research is not a requirement for this position, a certain degree of scholarly activity is expected of all faculty members. Evidence of interest and experience in research will be considered an asset.
