Primary Purpose of Position
The Lennon Distinguished Professor in Epidemiology is a prestigious academic appointment in the Department of Animal Sciences, within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University. This role is established to attract a visionary and accomplished leader in the specialized field of Epidemiology- a vital discipline within human and animal public health focusing on disease surveillance, prevention, and control within populations.
The distinguished professor will drive impactful interdisciplinary research on disease emergence, transmission dynamics, and public health implications. They will also be instrumental in advancing the department's teaching and curriculum related to animal health, disease and related areas. The position will support the development of an interdisciplinary graduate certificate in One Health, part of the department's strategic plan, and will significantly contribute to preparing students for critical careers in animal health, public health, government, research, and academia.
This role is a cornerstone in advancing the university's mission of excellence in teaching, research, and outreach and is key to addressing global challenges at the animal-human-environment interface.
This is a 9-month tenure-track faculty position.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES) has a rich history of innovation and application of cutting-edge technology. The CAES offers 9 BS degrees, 3 MS degrees and 1 PhD and educates over 1100 students. BS degrees include Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Biological Engineering, Child Development and Family Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutritional Sciences, Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture. The graduate programs include MS in Agricultural Education, MS in Agricultural and Environmental Systems and MS in Food and Nutritional Sciences, and the new interdisciplinary PhD in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with 5 concentrations, including an animal science specialization track. Nationally, the CAES produces the largest number of African American graduates in agriculture and second in Animal Sciences.
About the Department of Animal Sciences:
The Department of Animal Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science Degrees in Animal Science, Animal Science (Animal Industry concentration), and Laboratory Animal Science and two graduate programs: Master of Science in Agricultural and Environmental Systems, with a concentration in Integrated Animal Health Systems and a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Systems, with a concentration in Sustainable AnimalProduction. Thedepartment's instruction and research efforts are supported by excellent beef, poultry, swine, dairy, small ruminants, and equine facilities at the university farm and a newly renovated vivarium, located on the main campus, which can house all major laboratory animal species as well as provide research support. The faculty in the department conduct research related to genetics, biotechnology, bioinformatics, reproductive physiology, meat science, nutrition and immunology and infectious disease, and trains students to enter into careers related to animal health and biomedicine.
Minimum Requirements
Academic Qualifications: A DVM/Ph.D. or Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Veterinary Public Health, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
Professional Status: Eligible for appointment as a full professor with tenure at North Carolina A&T State University. This includes a nationally recognized record of exemplary scholarly achievement, including peer-reviewed publications, research leadership, and external funding success.
Research and Teaching Experience:
  • Demonstrated excellence in leading impactful, externally funded research programs in veterinary epidemiology or related areas.
  • A history of teaching and mentoring undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in epidemiology, public health, or veterinary science.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research and commitment to the One Health approach.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Experience: At least 10 years of post-doctoral academic or research experience, including experience in a tenured faculty role and preferably in a leadership or administrative capacity.
Skills and Expertise:
  • Expertise in veterinary disease modeling, outbreak investigations, and surveillance systems.
  • Experience with One Health initiatives and collaborations with medical, environmental, and public health sectors.
  • Proven success in securing grants from USDA, NIH, CDC, or related agencies.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines and with community and industry stakeholders.

Certification (Preferred): Board certification in veterinary preventive medicine or epidemiology (e.g., ACVPM) is highly desirable.
