What is a vertical?

Vertical jobs refer to positions within a specific industry or sector, often known as a 'vertical market.' These jobs focus on specialized knowledge and skills tailored to that industry, such as healthcare, finance, or technology. People working in verticals typically have expertise and experience unique to their chosen field, allowing them to address industry-specific challenges and opportunities. Companies often organize their sales, marketing, and operations around verticals to better serve the needs of particular market segments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in vertical market roles?

Professionals in vertical market roles often face the challenge of deeply understanding the unique needs, regulations, and trends within a specific industry segment. This requires ongoing research and adaptability as each vertical can have rapidly changing customer demands and compliance standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as product development and sales, is essential to tailor solutions and maintain competitiveness. Additionally, building strong relationships with clients within the vertical is key for long-term success and career advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vertical Marketing Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vertical Marketing Manager, you need deep industry expertise, strong analytical abilities, and a background in marketing or business, often supported by a relevant degree. Experience with CRM platforms, marketing automation tools, and data analytics systems is typically required. Outstanding communication, collaboration, and strategic thinking skills help you tailor campaigns and build relationships within the target industry. These skills ensure effective market positioning, drive growth in specialized sectors, and foster successful partnerships.

Introduction:
At Vertical Mechanical Group (VMG), we are always seeking talented individuals to join our growing team. Our commitment to exceptional customer service and innovative solutions drives our success and fuels continuous expansion. We're excited to offer opportunities for motivated professionals who are ready to elevate their careers. When you join VMG, you become part of a close-knit, supportive team that values both its employees and clients. Here, your growth powers our success.

About Us:
Vertical Mechanical Group is a leading provider of commercial HVAC and Plumbing solutions across the region. Formed by the unification of Anderson Mechanical Services, Inc. and Inspiration Plumbing Company, we bring decades of award-winning expertise to every project. Our portfolio spans new construction, renovations, upfits, design-build services, and specialty installations - all executed with precision and a commitment to excellence.

Position Overview:
We're seeking an accomplished and strategic Chief Estimator to lead our estimating department and drive the success of our preconstruction efforts. In this key leadership role, you will oversee the preparation of all estimates and proposals, ensure alignment with business objectives, and serve as a critical liaison between project management, operations, and executive leadership. The ideal candidate will bring a high level of technical knowledge, leadership acumen, and the ability to guide and grow a high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor a team of estimators, ensuring the development of accurate, detailed, and competitive estimates.

  • Oversee preparation of budgets, conceptual estimates, and hard bids for commercial HVAC and Plumbing projects.

  • Review all major estimates for consistency, accuracy, and completeness prior to executive review and submission.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align estimating strategies with broader project execution plans.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers to ensure reliable pricing and value-added solutions.

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement systems and tools to enhance department efficiency.

  • Lead preconstruction meetings and assist in project hand-offs to operations teams.

  • Analyze industry trends, market conditions, and historical data to improve bid competitiveness and accuracy.

  • Represent VMG in high-level bid reviews, presentations, and negotiations with clients and partners.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive estimating experience within the mechanical or general construction industry.

  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing an estimating team or department.

  • In-depth understanding of mechanical systems, construction methods, and cost drivers in commercial HVAC and Plumbing.

  • Proficient in estimating software and construction management tools.

  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.

  • Experience working collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and executives.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive base salary with performance-based incentives.

  • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance.

  • Generous paid time off and holidays.

  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.

  • A leadership role with opportunity for long-term growth and impact.

  • Supportive and dynamic work environment focused on innovation and excellence.

Additional Information:
Vertical Mechanical Group participates in a drug testing program. All candidates are required to submit to a drug test as a condition of employment.
VMG does not offer sponsorship for employment visa status. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.

Join VMG and help shape the future of commercial construction.
We look forward to welcoming a dedicated and visionary Chief Estimator to our leadership team.
