What is a venture debt firm?

A venture debt firm provides loans and credit facilities to early-stage and growth-stage companies, typically startups that have already raised equity financing from venture capital investors. Unlike traditional banks, venture debt firms focus on companies with high growth potential and offer funding that helps extend their runway without diluting ownership. These firms often work closely with venture capitalists and structure their loans to complement equity financing, allowing startups to access additional capital without giving up more equity. Venture debt can be used for working capital, equipment purchases, or bridging the gap to the next funding round.

What does a typical week look like for an analyst at a venture debt firm?

As an analyst at a venture debt firm, your week typically involves sourcing and evaluating potential investment opportunities, conducting financial and market due diligence, and building financial models to assess risk and return. You'll also collaborate closely with portfolio managers, legal teams, and occasionally interact with startup founders to gather information or support deal structuring. Analysts spend time preparing investment memos for internal credit committees and monitoring existing portfolio companies, making this a dynamic role that combines financial analysis, relationship management, and market research.
