The Role

We are looking for an Assistant Controller to join our Crypto Fund Finance team. The Assistant Controller will report directly to the Crypto Fund Controller and will work closely with other Assistant Controllers and Fund Finance staff. Internal customers of the role include Investor Relations, Fund Strategy, Corporate Accounting, General Partners, Crypto Technical Operations and external customers include Limited Partners and outside auditors. The Assistant Controller is responsible for daily cash flows of the Funds including wires for investing and cash distributions, monitoring crypto activity and quarterly Fund financial reporting. Given the increasing complexity of our portfolio, we require a candidate with direct liquid trading experience. This includes familiarity with NAV calculations, short positions, leverage, derivatives, and more frequent (daily or monthly) portfolio pricing cadences. We use enterprise software (AllVue, Anaplan, Salesforce, HazelTree, WorkDay, Tres, and Qval) for efficiency and scale.

  • Facilitate, review, and monitor cash flows to and from investors, portfolio companies, exchanges, custodians, prime brokers, and other counterparties 
  • Lead cash, token, stock, and other in-kind distributions, working closely with bankers, brokers, custodians, transfer agents, and internal stakeholders
  • Oversee and manage wiring activity for portfolio investments, trading activity, investor transactions, fund expenses, and other operational needs
  • Review work of Senior and Staff accountants
  • Maintain portfolio tracking reports
  • Monitor all crypto activity, including custody, staking, delegation, sales, and purchases
  • Work collaboratively and efficiently with the team to complete quarterly and annual financial statements, the annual audit, and fulfill tax requirements
  • Prepare all documentation in accordance with SEC guidelines and US GAAP
  • Coordinate with portfolio company counsel and internal General Counsel as necessary
  • Work closely with the Crypto vertical to ensure integration of internally developed software with our existing accounting systems
  • Evaluate current team processes and collaborate with colleagues to enhance them through technology and automation
  • Provide timely assistance with ad hoc reporting requests from limited partners, Crypto vertical and the Investor Relations team
  • Assist with projects as needed

This role requires an in-office presence 2 days a week in our Menlo Park, CA or San Francisco, CA office.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent education experience, with focus in accounting or finance 
  • 7+ years of combined public accounting or relevant accounting experience with a deep understanding of partnership accounting, venture capital operations, and hedge fund operations
  • Understanding of various investment instruments such as swaps, futures, and options
  • Able to deal with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse teams
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV accounting software is a plus

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $216,000 - $252,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.

This role is eligible to participate in the a16z carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave.
