What is a vehicle dynamics engineer?

A Vehicle Dynamics Engineer is responsible for optimizing a vehicle's ride, handling, and stability to ensure safety and performance. They use simulation tools, testing, and data analysis to develop suspension, steering, and braking systems. Their role involves working with mechanical and software teams to refine vehicle behavior under various conditions. This position is critical in automotive, motorsports, and autonomous vehicle development.

What types of projects and teams do vehicle dynamics engineers typically work on?

Vehicle Dynamics Engineers often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including design engineers, test drivers, software developers, and manufacturing specialists to optimize a vehicle's ride, handling, and stability. Projects may range from developing suspension systems to tuning steering or braking components, often requiring both simulation-based analysis and on-track validation. The work environment is dynamic, blending office-based analysis with hands-on testing at proving grounds. This collaborative and project-driven structure provides continuous learning and opportunities to make a direct impact on vehicle performance and user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a vehicle dynamics engineer?

A Vehicle Dynamics Engineer should have a solid understanding of mechanical engineering, physics, and mathematics, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, CarSim, and data acquisition systems, along with knowledge of automotive industry standards, is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These abilities are important to develop, analyze, and refine vehicle performance to ensure safety, comfort, and optimal handling characteristics.

Job description

Hardware Engineering is an innovative and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, reliability, software and vehicle engineers. We design, build, and perfect the products which are the eyes and ears of Waymo's autonomous driving technology, and integrate those products into vehicle platforms. We're seeking curious and talented teammates to keep us moving in the right direction.

This role follows a hybrid work schedule and you will report to Systems Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Use C++ and multi-domain modeling tools to develop models of chassis dynamics, actuator dynamics, and safety systems for Waymo platforms
  • Integrate vehicle dynamics models into the Waymo Simulator and simulation workflows
  • Define and drive the execution of test campaigns to characterize  the vehicle dynamics of Waymo platforms and validate vehicle dynamics models
  • Develop and execute sim-based analyses to support all phases of development of the Waymo Driver from requirements definition through verification and validation
  • Support partner teams across Waymo in applying vehicle dynamics simulation capabilities to their use cases

You have:

  • Master's degree in an engineering or related field (including ME, EE, CS, Robotics, Controls, Aerospace, etc.) or equivalent practical experience
  • At least 5 years experience modeling and simulating vehicle dynamics
  • Strong understanding of tire modeling techniques, including analytical and semi-empirical (Magic Formula) models
  • Strong understanding of chassis dynamics modeling techniques, including both low- and high-fidelity (multibody) models
  • Strong understanding of the principles of operation of vehicle safety systems, including anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and traction control
  • Experience with commercial vehicle dynamics modeling tools (Simscape, Maplesim, CarMaker, Carsim, Adams etc.)
  • At least 2 years experience implementing models/algorithms in C++ and performing data analysis using Python

We prefer:

  • Experience developing chassis control systems such as anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and traction control.
  • At least 5 years experience developing production-quality C++ and Python code
  • Experience integrating models into a broader simulation framework
  • Familiarity with Modelica
  • Familiarity with the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) standard
