UMMC Midtown Campus, one of two campuses of the University of Maryland Medical Center, has had a long history of working to keep our community healthy and has grown to become a trusted teaching hospital for medical and surgical care in Baltimore City.
Located in Baltimore’s cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 180-bed, community teaching hospital with a focus on helping people manage chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases.
The ideal candidate for this position should have:
- RN license for the State of Maryland
- Two years of nursing experience
- Current CPR certification
- Experience with PICC lines, midlines, and vascular access
- Critical Care or Emergency Department experience
General Summary
The CNII (CN-II) is a member of the health care team and renders nursing care to all patients within her/his assigned unit/area, assuring the nursing process is followed from admission through discharge. The CN-II collaborates with other members of the health team, delegates appropriately to support staff and directs care to assure the patient’s care needs are met. The CN-II is expected to exercise good judgment in the care of patients and the management of personnel. The CN-II promotes teamwork with physicians and personnel from other units/areas/departments. The CN-II must stay current with standards of practice through ongoing education relevant to nursing, such as the Nurse Practice Act. The RN’s actions and attitudes will promote and support the hospital’s mission and core values. In addition, the CN-II nurse must have demonstrated the ability to function as charge nurse efficiently and/or precept new staff members.
A Vascular Access Nurse is a registered nurse with specialized training in the assessment, insertion, management, and maintenance of vascular access devices used to administer medications, fluids, blood products, nutrition, and obtain blood samples.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assess patients to determine the most appropriate vascular access device based on therapy duration, medication type, and patient condition.
- Insert and maintain:
- Peripheral IV (PIV) catheters
- Ultrasound-guided peripheral IVs
- Midline catheters
- Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs)
- Assist with central venous access management and troubleshoot vascular access complications.
- Assess for difficult venous access and recommend appropriate interventions.
- Educate patients and staff on vascular access best practices.
- Monitor for and prevent complications such as:
- Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CLABSI)
- Infiltration and extravasation
- Occlusions
- Thrombosis
- Phlebitis
- Ensure compliance with evidence-based standards, including the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) Standards of Practice.
