How much do variant analyst jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the variant analyst position?
To thrive as a Variant Analyst, you need a solid background in genetics or molecular biology, experience in data analysis, and a relevant bachelor's or advanced degree. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools such as Variant Call Format (VCF) analysis software, genomic databases, and proficiency in scripting languages like Python or R is highly valued, as is certification in clinical genetics or genomics. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills distinguish top candidates in this field. These skills and qualities ensure accurate variant interpretation, effective cross-functional collaboration, and meaningful contributions to diagnostics or research.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a variant analyst?
A Variant Analyst typically spends their day analyzing genetic sequencing data to identify, classify, and interpret genetic variants of clinical or research significance. They utilize specialized bioinformatics software to process raw data, review scientific literature for evidence supporting variant classification, and document their findings in detailed reports. Collaboration is common, as analysts often work closely with laboratory geneticists, clinicians, and other members of a multidisciplinary team to ensure accurate and relevant results. Staying updated with the latest guidelines and advances in genomics is also an important part of the role.
What is a variant analyst?
A Variant Analyst is a professional who analyzes genetic variations in DNA sequences to identify mutations associated with diseases or traits. They interpret sequencing data, use bioinformatics tools, and contribute to clinical or research-based genetic analyses. Their work helps in diagnosing genetic disorders, guiding treatment decisions, and advancing precision medicine.

Job description
About the Opportunity
Job Summary
We invite applications for Part-time Lecturer (PTL) positions at the graduate level. We seek a colleague with expertise in bioinformatics and computational genomics to teach BIOL 6216 Applied Bioinformatics for the Cell and Gene Therapy Master's Programs, depending on program needs and enrollment. This course introduces foundational bioinformatics concepts, computational techniques, and programming skills essential for analyzing genomic and sequencing data, particularly in the context of genetic modification and therapeutic genome editing.
Key Responsibilities
The Part-time Lecturer will review and learn key teaching points within existing instructor guides and materials, prepare and deliver lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises based on provided course content, and facilitate in-person or online class discussions that encourage active learning and respectful debate. They will guide students through bioinformatics analyses in the context of genetic modification and therapeutic genome editing, including sequencing data interpretation and computational workflows, provide timely feedback, grading, and coaching to support student learning, and maintain consistent engagement with students regarding their performance and progress; and adhering to Northeastern's policies.
Part-time instructors work under the direction of the program director and will hold office hours as appropriate
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field, and have at least three to five years of experience in bioinformatics, preferably in a therapeutic or research setting. They should have demonstrated experience teaching or supporting graduate-level courses, particularly in bioinformatics or genomic data analysis, and possess strong programming skills in languages commonly used in bioinformatics, such as Python and R. Candidates should also have experience with genomic data analysis tools and platforms, including NGS pipelines, RNA-seq, or variant calling, and a strong understanding of cell and gene therapy concepts and applications. Effective communication skills, an open and supportive teaching style, and prior experience in a diverse higher education environment are also highly desirable.
