Tuesdays (office hours) and Sundays (7:00am-2:00pm)

JOB DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
This position is responsible for assisting with the coordination of Canton Township's Farmers Market, Community Garden programming, and additional related special events. Work assignments will occur at various Township facilities and community spaces.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Note: These examples are intended merely as illustrations of the various types of work performed.)
  • Plans, supervises and programs the Canton Farmers Market and related programs and activities as assigned.
  • Serves as lead staff responsible for effective and efficient operation of the Canton Farmers Market and related events and activities.
  • Coordinates the setup, teardown and cleanup of programs and events.
  • Builds professional relationships with vendors, staff, volunteers, and guests.
  • Responsible for recruiting, interviewing, training, scheduling, evaluating and supervising part-time/seasonal staff as directed.
  • Responsible for the purchase of supplies and equipment for the Farmers Market and related events and activities.
  • Develops and administers safety rules, policies, regulations and procedures for Farmers Market and related event vendors.
  • Prepares information and reports for budgets and monthly and annual reports as applicable, including, but not limited to, departmental and food assistance reporting.
  • Maintains accurate program, activity and equipment records.
  • Responsible for responding to, communicating and documenting incidents and emergency situations, including, but not limited to, First Aid, Severe Weather, and Missing Child events.
  • Responsible for remaining aware of community needs and current trends related to Farmers Markets and the recreation field to ensure the delivery of quality customer service.
  • Works with vendors, partner organizations, groups and community members to plan and promote the Farmers Market and recreation events and programs.
  • Greets and interacts with guests, community members, and vendors in a positive and friendly manner and provides excellent customer experiences.
  • Ensures that proper ADA accommodations, related to program and facility resources, are being met.
  • Responsible for facilities and equipment appearance and cleanliness, including detection and reporting of property and equipment defects.
  • Utilizes department-issued software for accurate operation of Farmers Market and related programs.
  • Safe operation of Township vehicles, including a 12-passenger van.
  • Responsible for the enforcement of departmental rules and regulations, operating procedures and policies.
  • Responsible for contracting instructors and vendors for Farmers Market and related events and activities.
  • Responsible for evaluating Farmers Market and related events and activities as assigned.
  • Ensures accurate money handling in accordance with department policies.
  • Maintains accurate reports, including, but not limited to, accident, incident and food assistance.
  • Detailed management of, and reporting related to, food assistance programs, including, but not limited to, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Double Up Food Bucks.
  • Participation and involvement with local and regional organizations like the Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA) and mParks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • High School Graduate or GED required.
  • Must possess a current, valid Driver's License with a driving history that does not create liability concerns, which include, but are not limited to, convictions of reckless driving, careless driving, suspended license, or convictions involving drinking and impaired driving.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in planning special events and logistics, meetings, or other professional related programming.
  • Previous customer service experience required; supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience with cash-handling, grant work, and data entry preferred.
  • Must obtain CPR/AED and first aid certification within 30 days of employment. CPR/AED and first aid classes are free to Township employees. Certification through an organization approved by Michigan's Bureau of Community and Health Systems, Child Care Licensing division, may also be accepted.
  • Ability to operate a 12-passenger van.
  • Ability to work a wide variety of shifts, including afternoons, evenings, weekends and holidays, with an emphasis on Sundays during the regular Market Season (May-October).
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions for long periods of time.
  • Strong organizational and both written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to perform manual lifting and loading of program supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to convey a positive and professional image to staff and community members at all times.
  • Ability to execute policies and procedures with fellow employees and the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to demonstrate techniques and skills associated with assigned programs and activities.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and direct recreation programs and the ability to effectively supervise subordinates.
  • This is an "At-Will" position. Work assignments and hours are scheduled based on availability, division requirements and within the confines of the budget. Schedules and work hours are not guaranteed and are subject to change at any time due to division needs, budgeting constraints, and staff availability.

  • This is an at-will position. Hours are limited and will vary based on the operational needs of the department. Employees in this position are not full-time and will be classified as variable-hour employees.
