What Is a Validation Engineer?

A validation engineer is responsible for testing equipment and electrical systems used in the manufacturing process. As a validation engineer, your primary duty is to work with the other members of the validation team to ensure that these systems measure up to company and industry standards. Skills needed for a validation engineer job include the ability to accurately test, measure, and calibrate manufacturing equipment for maximum efficiency and quality.

What is the difference between Validation Engineer vs Quality Assurance Engineer?

AspectValidation EngineerQuality Assurance Engineer
CertificationsGMP, ISO, Six SigmaISO, Six Sigma, CQA
Work EnvironmentRegulated industries like pharma, biotech, medical devicesManufacturing, software, and product development
Primary FocusEnsuring products meet specifications through validation processesPreventing defects through process and system improvements
Common UsageRegulatory compliance, validation protocolsProcess audits, quality systems

Validation Engineers focus on verifying that products and processes meet regulatory standards through validation protocols, especially in regulated industries. Quality Assurance Engineers concentrate on maintaining overall product quality by implementing and auditing quality systems. While both roles aim to ensure product safety and efficacy, Validation Engineers are more involved in validation activities, whereas QA Engineers focus on process improvement and defect prevention.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Validation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Validation Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance, typically backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with validation protocols, statistical analysis tools, and industry-specific regulations such as FDA, GMP, or ISO standards is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure that products and processes meet stringent quality and safety standards, minimizing risks and ensuring regulatory approval.

What are some common challenges Validation Engineers face when working cross-functionally with other departments?

Validation Engineers frequently collaborate with teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and research & development. One common challenge is aligning differing priorities and timelines between departments, which can sometimes delay validation projects. Effective communication skills and flexibility are crucial to navigating these cross-functional interactions, ensuring that all regulatory and quality requirements are met without hindering production schedules. Building strong working relationships and proactively addressing potential concerns can help Validation Engineers facilitate smoother project execution.

What are Validation Engineers?

Validation Engineers are professionals responsible for ensuring that systems, processes, or equipment meet regulatory standards and function as intended. They typically work in industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, manufacturing, and medical devices. Their duties involve creating validation protocols, conducting tests, analyzing data, and documenting results to ensure compliance with industry regulations and quality standards. Validation Engineers play a critical role in maintaining product safety and efficacy, as well as helping companies pass audits and inspections.

Job description

Opportunity
PeopleTec is currently seeking an Ontology Engineer to support our Huntsville, AL location.
PeopleTec is seeking an Ontology Engineer to support the design and governance of an ontology ecosystem underpinning a digital engineering / digital thread effort at our Huntsville, AL location. This role will design and maintain ontologies that allow data from multiple engineering tools and disciplines to be represented consistently, enabling traceability and interoperability across the engineering lifecycle.
Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and maintain ontologies in OWL, extending Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) and the Common Core Ontologies (CCO), to represent engineering concepts across multiple disciplines and domains.
  • Maintain namespace and identifier conventions, modular organization of ontology content, versioning, and dependency relationships between ontology modules
  • Establish conventions for aligning model elements from MBSE tools (e.g., Cameo/MagicDraw, SysML) and other engineering tools with ontology classes, supporting consistent semantic tagging across tools.
  • Develop validation logic (e.g., SHACL or equivalent schema validation) and apply reasoning to check ontology consistency and data conformance.
  • Author queries (e.g., SPARQL or equivalent) to support traceability, impact analysis, and reporting needs.
  • Define and document ontology governance practices: modeling conventions, review and approval processes, reuse principles, and onboarding guidance for engineering teams and tool integrators.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers, software developers, and tool integration teams to ensure ontologies meet practical, real-world data exchange needs across MBSE, PLM, simulation, and other engineering tools.
  • Communicate ontology design decisions and tradeoffs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience:
  • 10-15 years in systems engineering, knowledge representation, or digital engineering, with demonstrated ontology development on complex engineered systems.
  • Demonstrated experience developing ontologies for complex engineered systems, with evidence of applying that work in a practical or production context.
  • Hands-on expertise with formal ontology representation (e.g., OWL/RDFS) and/or property graph schema design, along with corresponding query and validation approaches (e.g., SPARQL/SHACL, or Gremlin/Cypher and schema validation tooling).
  • Practical experience with ontology editing tools such as Protรฉgรฉ.
  • Working knowledge of BFO and CCO
  • Experience with at least one graph-based data store used to host ontology or linked data (e.g., a triplestore such as GraphDB, Stardog, or Apache Jena Fuseki; or a property graph database such as Neo4j or JanusGraph).
  • Working knowledge of MBSE concepts and tools (e.g., Cameo/MagicDraw, SysML) sufficient to align model data with ontology structures.
  • Programming proficiency in Python for ontology tooling, automation, and validation pipelines.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate ontology concepts for engineers and stakeholders without formal ontology backgrounds.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • An active DoD Secret clearance is required to perform this work. Candidates are required to have an active Secret clearance upon hire (or the able to obtain), and the ability to maintain this level of clearance during their employment.

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Science, Philosophy/Logic, or similar).
  • Master's or PhD in related field preferred.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience with semantic data integration or digital thread implementations in an engineering or enterprise context.
  • Active DoD Secret, Top Secret, or TS/SCI clearance.
  • Familiarity with the Ontology Modeling Language (OML) or similar model-driven ontology approaches.
  • Familiarity with SysML v2.
  • Familiarity with DoD digital engineering policy and practices (e.g., DoDI 5000.97, DoD Digital Engineering Strategy).
  • Experience with ontology governance practices
  • Experience integrating ontologies with knowledge graphs or property graph databases, in addition to triplestores.
