As a Data Center Engineering Specialist, you will provide engineering design and support for electrical systems, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, fire suppression systems, security systems and other facility aspects of computer data centers with little to no supervision. Provide support for enterprise information system infrastructure technology solutions aligned with industry and company standards. Work in close collaboration with team members, end users, and other IS departments to meet the company's goals. The primary focus will be support work, but will also be involved in the design and implementation of projects.

  • Support assigned information system infrastructure disciplines/components and business users as a lead for highly complex projects and/or enhancements to existing architecture. This includes the use of Valero's system to track support activities.
  • Provide design specifications and procedures for electrical systems, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, fire suppression systems, security systems and other facility aspects of the data center.
  • Provide management, monitoring, and optimization of power utilization, HVAC requirements and capacity planning for Valero data center.
  • Provide supervision in the use of electrical devices and energy consumption to maintain efficient and safe utilization of Valero data center facilities.
  • Coordinate the acquisition, location selection, and power requirements for the installation of new data systems with I/S staff.
  • Coordinate retirement, removal, and disposal of computer systems.
  • Monitor and report on critical power systems (UPSs & PDUs), HVAC systems, fire suppression systems, and leak detection systems.
  • Participate in information system infrastructure design and implementation projects as a project manager, lead or individual contributor, as required. As a project manager, responsibilities will include the successful and reliable implementation of a cost effective highly complex project while meeting business needs.
  • Work on highly complex tasks for the design, development, maintenance and upgrade of information system infrastructure involving hardware, software, and system applications. This includes, but is not limited to: trouble-shooting, problem-solving, issue resolution, user interaction, training, defining systems scope, gathering requirements, documenting design specifications, research and fact-finding, configuration, testing, reporting, cutover, IS and business user coordination.
  • Effective work relationships within the department and strong functional relationships at various job levels with business users, IS departments, user groups and Valero business partners.
  • Learn or demonstrate a broad, in-depth mastery of more than one information system infrastructure discipline/component and associated application/hardware integration while continuously looking for opportunities to improve, streamline, reinvent processes and technology gaps.
  • Help coordinate the adoption of new procedures resulting from software and hardware changes, including the development of system specifications, documentation, training, and communication plans.
  • Perform analysis on and recommend quality highly complex solutions to information system infrastructure technology disciplines/components and stay abreast of emerging cost effective technologies.
  • Understand and mentor others on the various IT methodologies which include project management, development, service management and system architecture
  • May be required to work off-hours and on weekends for projects and/or support.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • On call 24 x 7 rotations, after hours, and extended hours may be required.

This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 5 years of experience with electrical control equipment, electrical circuitry, and data center management or related is required.
  • Sound grounding and experience in electrical engineering principles and analysis required.
  • Able and willing to work on-site, in-person at a Valero San Antonio location, required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of critical datacenter electrical and/or mechanical equipment such as UPS, Generators, Switchgears, Power Distribution Units, VFDs, Automatic/Static Transfer Switches, AHUs, CRACs, Chillers, Pumps, Cooling Towers, Water Treatment and system design.
  • Experience with reading, interpreting & understanding of One-line diagrams and engineering blueprints
  • Exhibit high technical expertise in areas such as system troubleshooting, integration & testing, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and Corrective Action (CA) documentation for equipment failures
  • EPMS/SCADA/BMS Controls experience (Software and/or Hardware)
  • Professional standing; possesses or working toward P.E. license preferred.
  • Membership in IEEE preferred.
  • Refinery industry or related business/IT experience preferred.
