Job FocusAssigning codes for VA medical servicesProcessing insurance claims and billing

Va Medical Coding involves assigning medical codes for services provided to veterans within the VA system, focusing on accurate documentation. Medical Billing Specialists handle the billing process, submitting claims to insurance companies across various healthcare settings. While both roles require coding and billing certifications, Va Medical Coders work specifically within the VA system, whereas Medical Billing Specialists serve a wider range of healthcare providers.

What is VA medical coding?

VA medical coding is the process of translating medical diagnoses, procedures, and services provided to veterans within the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system into standardized alphanumeric codes. These codes are essential for accurate medical records, billing, and reimbursement, as well as for tracking healthcare statistics and outcomes. VA medical coders use specialized knowledge of coding systems like ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, and must also be familiar with VA-specific documentation and compliance requirements. Their work ensures that services delivered to veterans are properly documented and reported, supporting both patient care and administrative processes.

How to become a VA medical coder?

To become a VA medical coder, you typically need to complete a medical coding training program or obtain certification such as the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Experience with medical records, coding software, and knowledge of healthcare regulations are also important for working in a VA medical coding role.

Does the VA use medical coders?

Yes, the VA employs medical coders to review and assign appropriate codes for patient diagnoses and procedures, ensuring accurate billing and record-keeping. VA medical coders typically need knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and may require certification. They work within the VA healthcare system to support administrative and clinical functions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VA medical coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VA Medical Coder, you need a thorough understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, coding systems (like ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS), and typically a certification such as CPC or CCS. Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical billing software is crucial. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and the ability to maintain confidentiality are important soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate coding, proper reimbursement, and compliance with federal regulations in the VA healthcare system.

What are some common challenges faced by VA medical coders, and how can they be addressed?

VA Medical Coders often encounter challenges such as staying updated with frequent changes in coding regulations and accurately interpreting complex medical documentation. Additionally, understanding the specific requirements of the Veterans Affairs healthcare system can be demanding. To address these challenges, it’s important to participate in ongoing training, utilize official coding resources, and actively communicate with healthcare providers for clarification. Many VA Medical Coders also benefit from collaborating with peers and joining professional networks to share best practices.

Job description

ED Physician Opportunity — Hampton VAMC

$255–$370/hr | 1099 Contract | Flexible Block Scheduling

Serve Veterans • No RVU Pressure • No Billing • Hampton Roads, VA

About this opportunity: Essential HealthCare Solutions (EHS) is pursuing a federal staffing contract to provide Emergency Department coverage at the Hampton VA Medical Center. We are building our clinical bench in advance of contract award. Interested physicians are encouraged to express interest now — placement is contingent on contract award.

Want to talk first? Call or text Patricia Hughes at 901-846-2990 — or email patricia.hughes@essentialhcsolutions. A 15-minute conversation, no formal submission required.

The Opportunity

EHS is pursuing a contract to provide board-certified or board-eligible Emergency Medicine physician coverage at the Hampton VA Medical Center in Hampton, Virginia.

This is a 1099 contract opportunity designed for physicians who want clinical autonomy, predictable patients, and a real personal life — without the productivity targets, billing headaches, and patient-satisfaction-scoring pressures of community ED contracts.

What makes this opportunity different

  • Veteran patient population. Largely stable, established patients with continuity in the VA system. Lower walk-in trauma volume than a typical community ED.
  • No RVUs, no billing. Federal facility — you practice medicine, not coding. No charge capture, no denials, no patient collections.
  • Flexible block scheduling. Commit to the shifts that fit your life. Great for physicians supplementing a primary position or transitioning out of full-time employment.
  • Mission-driven. Caring for U.S. Veterans — a patient population that is often deeply appreciative of the care they receive.
  • Hampton Roads lifestyle. Coastal Virginia: beaches, low cost of living, military-friendly community, easy access to Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and the Outer Banks.

    Compensation

  • $225–$300 per hour, 1099 contracted, commensurate with experience, credentials, and final contract funding.
  • Paid per shift — no productivity clawbacks.
  • Malpractice and credentialing support provided through EHS.

Schedule & Practice Environment

  • Shift length: 8 / 10 / 12 hour options |

Who We Are Seeking

  • MD or DO from an accredited institution
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or AOBEM)
  • Current, unrestricted U.S. medical license (any state or territory)
  • Current DEA registration; BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications
  • U.S. citizenship (required for VA facilities)
  • Eligibility for VA credentialing and privileging

Prior VA, military, or federal facility experience a plus — not required

Scope of Services

  • Provide comprehensive emergency care to Veteran patients
  • Perform medical screening exams, stabilize critical patients, and manage the full scope of ED procedures
  • Order and interpret diagnostic studies; coordinate admissions, transfers, and consults
  • Document in the VA EHR (CPRS / Oracle Health)
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary ED team and meet ACEP-aligned clinical standards

Express Interest — A 15-Minute Call

If any of this sounds interesting — even just to learn more — reach out. No formal submission required to start the conversation. Expressing interest now puts you on the EHS bench for placement upon contract award.

This opportunity is contingent upon EHS being awarded the federal staffing contract for the VA Medical Center. Expressions of interest do not constitute an offer of engagement.
