Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team, you will contribute to the design of the Electrical Power System (EPS) for future space vehicles. EPS scope includes power generation, storage, regulation, control, and distribution to vehicle subsystems and payloads. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration, and your dedicated commitment and detailed attention will further the cause of safe and repeatable spaceflight. You will write your respective subsystem's functional and performance requirements, lead/support integrated analysis, and plan the verification and validation campaign to ensure safe and reliable operations in space. You will also represent your system in cross-functional trades and impact studies for architectures and vehicles that you support. You should expect that this foundational part of our vision will require excellent communication and teamwork.

You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing the Lunar Transportation system that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Support development of detailed requirement verification and validation plans and work directly within integrated environments such as JAMA, DOORS Next Gen and Rationale Quality Manager
  • Develop system safety artifacts such as FHAs, FTAs and FMECAs
  • Support the alignment, documentation, and consistent implementation of Lunar Transportation System engineering practices across applicable ADP projects.
  • Supporting system and lower-level requirements management, including change control, audits, and coordination with other teams
  • During system engineering reviews of requirement development, decomposition, and allocation activities (requirements traceability), apply definition of customer needs, integration, requirements definition, verification and validation planning, and requirements management.
  • Coordinate and collaborate as needed to ensure alignment of V&V activities in accordance with V&V plan.
  • Coordinate with Integration & Test teams to ensure test facilities (including integration labs) have the required capabilities per requirements definition
  • Track V&V activities to successful completion, which may include reviewing subsystem test plans and possible travel to test facilities when needed.
  • Support trades studies and supply knowledge to help down-select spacecraft electrical power system architectures appropriate for mission requirements.
  • Create and maintain system diagrams for power distribution, system grounding, and bonding.
  • Trade combinations of various power generation and storage solutions such as solar arrays, fuel cells, and battery modules (especially Li-Ion chemistries).
  • Support maintenance and generation of EPS budgets and power equipment lists that track power generation, consumption and storage during all relevant portions of a mission.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related disciplines
  • Strong understanding of Systems Engineering principles and practices such as requirements definition, requirements traceability, functional decomposition, and verification and validation.
  • A breadth of understanding in electrical engineering such as developing complex circuit cards, consumer electronics, wireless devices, or other advanced electronic commercial or aerospace products
  • Experience with analog, digital and mixed-signal circuit analysis, simulation, design, test, troubleshooting, signal integrity, power, and grounding and general board layout principles
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and supply to a culture of collaboration

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical subject area
  • 5+ years of space systems engineering or equivalent experience in other highly complex industry areas (such as automotive)
  • Experience with requirements development/management tools such as JAMA or DOORS Next Gen
  • Experience with systems engineering modeling tools, such as Cameo.
  • Demonstrated experience designing high reliability safety-critical, Class 2/3 board assemblies; familiarity with IPC-A-600/610, DO-254 and similar standards
  • Experience with launch vehicle Avionics systems hardware development, integration, and test

Scripting, Programming and Analysis: TCL, Python, Linux shell and Windows batch scripting; C / C++; MATLAB / Simulink, HSPICE and HFSS (or similar modeling/analysis tools)
