What Does a UX Designer Do?

A UX (user experience) designer looks at all of the elements of a user-based website or digital experience and creates improvements with the user in mind. This can mean creating a fresh new visual design plan or revamping the entire structure of the site. The UX Designer works with content strategists, developers, and managers to create a wireframe, plan the elements of design or a stylebook, and create a new experience for testing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UX Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UX Designer, you need a solid understanding of user research, wireframing, prototyping, and interaction design, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, and usability testing platforms is essential. Strong communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help you effectively understand user needs and work with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure the creation of intuitive, user-centered products that drive engagement and satisfaction.

How do UX Designers typically collaborate with developers and other stakeholders during a project?

UX Designers frequently work closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders throughout the design process. They participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss user needs, share design prototypes, and gather feedback to ensure that the final product aligns with both user expectations and technical constraints. Regular check-ins and design reviews help address any challenges early, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone contributes to a user-centered outcome. Open communication and flexibility are key to successfully integrating design with development workflows.

Job description

Role: UX Designer
Location: Bloomington, IL
Duration: 6+ Months
Job Description:
Top Three Skills:
1. 5+ years' experience with UX design(wireframes and mockups)- specifically mobile/native apps
2. Experience working with research and User Centric Design teams to design and conduct surveys and content for Usability Testing.
3. Some experience with Axure to convert wireframes and designs into prototypes for User Experience Testing
Job Description:
This person will be working on several different projects including intranet redesign and native/mobile application efforts
This person will be working with User Centered Design process. They are interested in how their experience with UCD follows our approach. It doesn't mean the same to everyone. (User-centered design (UCD) is a process (not restricted to interfaces or technologies) in which the needs, wants, and limitations of end users of a product, service or process are given extensive attention at each stage of the design process. User-centered design can be characterized as a multi-stage problem solving process that not only requires designers to analyses and foresee how users are likely to use a product, but also to test the validity of their assumptions with regard to user behavior in real world tests with actual users. Such testing is necessary as it is often very difficult for the designers of a product to understand intuitively what a first-time user of their design experiences, and what each user's learning curve may look like.
The chief difference from other product design philosophies is that user-centered design tries to optimize the product around how users can, want, or need to use the product, rather than forcing the users to change their behavior to accommodate the product.)
UX is about creating experiences, processes, and meeting needs while Design is more about layout and interaction. Both important but they need people who can walk in and grasp the information and value of the UX research and concepting that we've done and not jump straight to design without first understanding the UX goals.
