JOB SUMMARY

The Pharmacy vision is to deliver optimal medication management across all dimensions of care, every time. Each pharmacy team member is essential in ensuring that UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper Pharmacy exists to ensure safe, effective, and affordable medication use in our communities, one person at a time.

The Pharmacy Technician serves as a part of the healthcare team at UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper and collaborates with other team members, to provide optimal care. The Technician accepts responsibility, authority, and accountability for management and provision of care in accordance with the current policies and procedures.

The Pharmacy Technician is able to demonstrates the ability to competently work in different general and specialized areas of pharmacy practice. 

The essential duties of a pharmacy technician at UVA Community Health are to: 

  • Demonstrates advanced technical skills and ownership for the work area  
  • Work independently with little oversight  
  • Apply professional knowledge while working in the specialized area of the pharmacy  
  • Continually seeks out additional training opportunities and stays abreast of new and changing information for these assigned areas  
  • Demonstrate the ability to competently work in general and specialized areas of the pharmacy practice  
  • Participate in the training of new employees 
  • Fill, prepare, and deliver medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist/licensed independent practitioner.  
  • Consistently follows policy and procedures 
  • Ensuring adequate supplies are available for continuous patient care 
  • Triages and escalate any questions or issues outside the pharmacy technician's scope of practice to the staff pharmacist or supervisor as needed  
  • Use appropriate systems for processing of patient information  
  • Ensure quality is maintained according to departmental and legal requirements 
  • Appropriately operate pharmacy equipment
  • Maintains considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration,  
  • Demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and communication skills with other healthcare professionals. 
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be required. 

Communication: Ensures timely and consistent communication. 

  • Ensures timely responses to service line requests and inquiries.   
  • Greets and assists visitors to the department.  
  • Answers all incoming telephone calls and provides accurate information as needed.  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with other healthcare professionals.

Quality: Checks and controls quality and accuracy of work

  • Prioritizes workflow ensuring all services are performed in a timely manner.  
  • Considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects.

Teamwork: Works within a team to achieve patient and team goals.  

  • Participates in the onboarding of other team members.  
  • Shares and initiates regular and professional communication with co-workers. 
  • Facilitates and participates in regular staff meetings.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to adjust activities to accommodate the needs of team members/internal customers. 
  • Resolves conflicts independently, as appropriate. 
  • Accepts responsibility for actions and acts positively upon feedback from others.

Teamwork: Develops and delivers effective education to pharmacists and other healthcare providers.  

  • Serves as a preceptor to residents and students.  
  • Participates in the onboarding of pharmacists and other team members.  
  • Provides ongoing feedback to fellow pharmacists to achieve desired outcomes. 
  • Serves as a mentor to pharmacy team. 

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or GED required. 

Experience: 4 years of relevant experience, or 2 years of employment required

Licensure:

  • Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration is required. 
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (ExCPT) required.  

Additional Skills/Requirements Required:

State Registration and/or evidence of renewal is required for both Pharmacists and Technicians fifteen days prior to expiration and Technicians are required to be either certified through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or be actively enrolled in pharmacy school or be active in Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) or Foreign Pharmacy Equivalency Certification (FPGEC). Considerable knowledge and application of basic math skills, including ratio and proportion relationships; strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Basic technology skills. Other duties as outline in UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper and facility specific policies and procedures. Ability to drive/travel to multiple facilities/locations as needed. Ability to work as part of a high performing, change ready and resilient team.

Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred: Considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects; the ability to demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and communication skills with other healthcare professionals.

Work Function/Activity: Medium to Heavy Physical Demand

The job requires constant sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping. Frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs. occasionally. For any weight over 35 lbs. use Safe Handling Equipment. The base compensation range for this role is  $25.00 hourly.

Please note that the pay rate does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
