Job description

Description
The Associate Meter Engineer is an entry-level engineering role responsible for supporting the design, configuration, and validation of metering systems within the CAISO service territory and other Local Regulatory Authorities (LRA) or utility service areas. This position focuses on learning and applying core metering knowledge while supporting experienced engineers and meter technicians with system reviews, documentation, and installation support.
The Associate Meter Engineer will assist with field implementations, including installing and verifying revenue-grade meter and communication systems, and will develop a working knowledge of relevant CAISO and utility metering requirements. The role includes significant hands-on learning with guided mentorship and structured training.
Responsibilities
  • Reviews metering single-line and three-line diagrams for accuracy and compliance with established metering standards.
  • Provides design input and redlines to engineering, project management, and metering teams.
  • Learns to interpret and apply the CAISO BPM for Metering and other utility metering rules.
  • Supports the programming, testing, and verification of solid-state meters under supervision.
  • Learns to perform transformer burden testing, phasor analysis, and loss compensation calculations.
  • Assists with documentation development and redlines for metering configuration and electrical diagrams.
  • Works with meter technicians in the field to learn installation and commissioning of metering systems.
  • Verifies Modbus and DNP point scaling and performs basic validation checks for data accuracy.
  • Develops proficiency in troubleshooting communications, wiring issues, and programming errors through guided support.
  • Records test data, completes work orders, and updates internal documentation systems.
  • Practices safe work habits in high-voltage environments and follows company safety protocols.
  • Participates in technical training sessions, including manufacturer courses (ION, Elster, etc.), internal Trimark training, and industry meter schools.
  • Provides support for meter-related service tickets in collaboration with Client Care and internal departments.
  • Begins learning to configure RIGs and associated telemetry equipment for CAISO meter data reporting.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related technical field required.
  • 0-2 years of experience working with electrical systems or metering preferred.
  • Familiarity with single-line and three-line electrical drawings and AC/DC power fundamentals.
  • Strong analytical skills with a desire to grow in power metering and utility compliance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications; basic knowledge of ION Setup or similar metering tools a plus.
  • Valid driver's license: up to 40% travel required.
