Job description

Job Title: Utility Foreman
Company: Steve Tate & Sons Plumbing 
Location: Mount Airy, NC (travel to regional job sites required) 
Schedule: 1st Shift / (typically 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, summer time may start earlier)

Position Summary:
The Utility Foreman oversees crews performing underground utility and plumbing construction, including installation and repair of water, sewer, storm drainage, and related piping systems. The Foreman is responsible for directing daily field operations, maintaining safety and quality standards, coordinating materials and equipment, and ensuring projects are completed according to plans and schedules.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and direct utility crews and subcontractors.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and utility layouts.
  • Coordinate installation of underground water and sewer lines.
  • Operate or oversee excavation and trenching operations.
  • Ensure proper grades, elevations, bedding, connections, and backfill.
  • Coordinate with project managers, inspectors, general contractors, and other trades.
  • Schedule manpower, equipment, materials, and daily work activities.
  • Inspect completed work for quality and compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Enforce OSHA and company safety procedures, particularly trench and excavation safety.
  • Troubleshoot field issues and make practical decisions to keep projects moving.
  • Maintain daily records, production reports, and material usage.
  • Train and mentor laborers, utility installers, and apprentices.
  • Maintain tools, machinery, and jobsite organization.
  • Assist with testing, inspections, tie-ins, and final completion of utility systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Several years of experience in underground utilities, commercial plumbing, or site construction.
  • Previous foreman or crew-lead experience.
  • Strong knowledge of water, sewer, and underground piping systems.
  • Ability to read plans and use construction measurements/elevations.
  • Experience with excavators, skid steers, trenching equipment, and related machinery.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Plumbing or utility-related certifications/licenses are a plus.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
