Position: Seasonal Crew Worker - Grounds
Department: Parks & Recreation
Division: Landscape Maintenance
Rate of Pay: $10.50/hr.
Nature of Work
This is seasonal manual labor work involving the maintenance, appearance, and cleanliness of City of Hattiesburg parks, public green spaces, rights-of-way, recreation facilities, and public restrooms during the summer season. Employees in this position will work primarily outdoors as part of the Parks Landscape Maintenance crew and will be exposed to extended periods of heat, humidity, and varying weather conditions with occasional indoor custodial assignments.
The Seasonal Crew Worker - Grounds performs a wide variety of landscaping, mowing, weed control, grounds cleanup, litter removal, and custodial duties to help ensure public park spaces and city-maintained common areas remain safe, clean, attractive, and well maintained for daily community use.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Perform routine mowing, weed eating, edging, blowing, trimming, and general grounds maintenance at parks, public green spaces, and designated city rights-of-way.
• Assist with planting flowers, shrubs, sod, grass, and other landscape materials as assigned.
• Pull weeds, spread mulch, water plants, and maintain landscaped beds throughout assigned park locations.
• Pick up litter, limbs, debris, and trash from grounds, parking areas, playgrounds, sidewalks, walking paths, and facility surroundings.
• Empty trash receptacles and transport collected waste to designated disposal areas.
• Clean and maintain public restrooms, park shelters, pavilions, and indoor recreation support spaces including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing fixtures, wiping surfaces, and restocking supplies.
• Operate City-owned vehicles and equipment including trucks, trailers, zero-turn mowers, weed eaters, blowers, pressure washers, and other grounds maintenance tools.
• Perform basic preventive maintenance and daily cleaning of assigned equipment and tools.
• Assist with pressure washing, facility cleanup, and beautification projects as needed.
• Follow all City safety policies and proper equipment operating procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including occasional after-hours and weekend work.
Knowledge/Skills
• Ability to perform strenuous outdoor labor for extended periods in summer weather conditions.
• Knowledge of general lawn care, groundskeeping, litter abatement, and landscape maintenance practices preferred.
• Ability to safely operate lawn equipment, hand tools, and light maintenance machinery.
• Ability to complete custodial cleaning assignments thoroughly and efficiently.
• Ability to follow instructions, work as part of a crew, and maintain daily productivity.
• Dependable attendance and willingness to assist where needed across multiple city-maintained park sites.
Qualifications
• Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age and enrolled in high school/college or possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, custodial work, sanitation, or general outdoor labor preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Mississippi Driver's License.
• Must be physically capable of lifting, bending, walking, pushing equipment, and working outdoors for prolonged periods.
