How does a User Interface Designer typically collaborate with developers and UX designers during a project?

User Interface Designers work closely with both developers and UX designers throughout the design and development lifecycle. They translate UX research and wireframes into visually appealing, user-friendly interfaces, often participating in design sprints or agile ceremonies. Regular communication with developers ensures that design specifications are feasible and that the final product matches the intended look and feel. Collaboration tools and design systems help maintain consistency and streamline feedback, making teamwork smooth and efficient.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a User Interface Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Interface Designer, you need a solid understanding of visual design principles, user-centered design processes, and proficiency in design tools, typically supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with software such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and knowledge of prototyping and wireframing tools is commonly expected. Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving abilities set standout designers apart in this role. These skills ensure the creation of intuitive, visually appealing interfaces that enhance user satisfaction and meet business goals.

What Does a User Interface Designer Do?

A User Interface (UI) Designer creates a vision for the overall look and feel of a website to make it accessible and easy to navigate for users. You’ll work on a team of user experience designers, software developers, and marketing experts. Using storyboards and modeling tools, User Interface Designers conceptualize ideas, sometimes even writing copy or generating their own designs. You’ll develop an in-depth understanding of a brand while also conducting research on possible improvements. Oftentimes, you will create and facilitate surveys and other assessment tools to collect user feedback and translate your findings into possible new directions for a website or computer program. You are responsible for making the product accessible for your target audience.

What are User Interface Designers?

User Interface Designers are professionals responsible for creating the visual layout and interactive elements of software applications, websites, and digital products. They focus on designing intuitive, attractive, and user-friendly interfaces that improve the user's experience. Their work involves selecting color schemes, typography, button styles, and ensuring consistency across all screens. UI Designers collaborate closely with UX Designers and developers to bring digital products to life and ensure they are accessible and easy to use.

This role offers an opportunity to shape the user interface for advanced optical inspection and laser processing products used across semiconductor, flat panel, consumer electronics, automotive, and aerospace industries. As a Senior UI Software Engineer, you will work within a cross-disciplinary software development team to design and build user-centric interfaces that control complex hardware and application software. You will contribute to best-in-class solutions in a fast-paced, well-funded startup environment that emphasizes innovation, quality, and modern engineering practices, with occasional domestic and international travel of up to 10%.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop user interfaces with a strong emphasis on user-centric design for both hardware control and application software.
  • Design, build, and maintain clear, efficient, reusable, and reliable code using C#, Blazor, XAML/WPF, and other relevant languages and frameworks.
  • Propose UI designs and technical alternatives, and present them for internal review with key stakeholders and leadership to arrive at functional, scalable applications.
  • Collaborate closely with UX designers, product managers, and backend developers to create seamless, intuitive user experiences.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and enhance existing UI components and applications, including implementing major upgrades and architectural improvements.
  • Participate in code reviews, enforce and follow coding standards, and adhere to industry-standard development best practices.
  • Integrate third-party libraries and components, especially for visualization and streamlined user interaction.
  • Apply modern software development practices such as git-flow, continuous integration, package management, and containerized builds.
  • Develop and maintain automated tests, including unit tests and UI automation tests, to ensure code quality and reliability.
  • Track, document, and communicate issues related to instrument operation, bugs, and performance to the agile team and program management.
  • Contribute as both an individual contributor and a collaborative team member, delivering high-quality work with strong attention to detail.
  • Identify risks and obstacles early, communicate them openly and in a timely manner, and take appropriate action to help meet project schedules.
  • Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pull request feedback, and pair programming, fostering best practices in UI development.
  • Adapt quickly to new codebases, architectures, and technologies, and apply your experience across different platforms and industries.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 6 years of professional experience in software development, with approximately 6 years focused on UI development and around 10 total years of software development experience.
  • Strong experience with C#, .NET (any version), and object-oriented programming.
  • Proficiency with .NET frameworks and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).
  • Experience with UI technologies such as Blazor, Razor, or .NET MAUI, or a combination of CSS, HTML, C#, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with ASP.NET MVC or ASP.NET Web Forms, along with solid HTML and CSS knowledge.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure or equivalent cloud tools, with particular emphasis on Azure DevOps or comparable tools such as Jira.
  • Proficiency in modern software development practices including git-flow, continuous integration, package management, and containerized builds.
  • Experience working in agile development environments.
  • Demonstrated history of test automation, including unit testing, code analysis, and delivering high-quality software.
  • Strong understanding of UI design principles and best practices, with a focus on usability and user-centric design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work quickly and dynamically in a fast-paced startup environment and to switch technologies and platforms comfortably.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience and interest in machine vision.
  • Familiarity with software development for capital equipment and hardware control systems.
  • Experience integrating third-party visualization and interaction components.
  • Experience with UI automation testing tools such as Playwright or similar frameworks.
  • Knowledge of GRPC for communication between services or components.
  • Experience with WinUI and advanced WPF techniques.
  • Background in developing user interfaces for disruptive or emerging technologies.
  • Ability to ramp up quickly on new codebases and architectures, and to understand both high-level system design and low-level implementation details.
Work Environment

This position is based on-site five days a week in a brand-new, highly collaborative facility that emphasizes research and development. You will work closely with a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and product stakeholders in an environment focused on innovation, rapid iteration, and high-impact solutions. The role involves working with modern Microsoft and .NET technologies, Azure-based tooling, and contemporary development pipelines.
