What is user interface design?

User Interface (UI) Design is the process of creating visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces for software, websites, and applications. It focuses on the look, layout, and interactive elements that users engage with, such as buttons, menus, and icons. UI designers aim to make digital experiences intuitive and efficient by considering color schemes, typography, spacing, and overall visual hierarchy. Good UI design enhances usability and contributes to a positive user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user interface designer?

To thrive as a User Interface Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, visual hierarchy, and user-centered design, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field. Proficiency with design tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and familiarity with prototyping and wireframing systems is essential. Strong collaboration, creativity, and effective communication skills help you work with cross-functional teams and translate user needs into intuitive interfaces. These skills ensure the creation of visually appealing, user-friendly products that enhance user satisfaction and drive business goals.

What are the most common challenges faced by user interface designers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

User Interface Designers often face challenges in balancing user needs with technical constraints when working alongside developers, product managers, and other stakeholders. It can be difficult to ensure that design concepts are faithfully implemented without compromising usability or visual appeal due to time or resource limitations. Effective communication and frequent feedback loops are essential to align everyone’s expectations and achieve the best results. Building strong collaborative relationships helps facilitate smoother workflows and enhances the overall quality of the product.

Is user interface design a good career?

User interface design is a viable career that involves creating visually appealing and user-friendly digital interfaces. It requires skills in design tools, understanding user experience principles, and often benefits from a portfolio and certifications. The field offers opportunities in various industries with competitive salaries and growth potential.

What does a user interface designer do?

A user interface designer creates the visual layout and interactive elements of digital products such as websites and applications. They focus on usability, aesthetics, and consistency, often using tools like Adobe XD or Figma, and collaborate with developers and UX designers to ensure a seamless user experience.

Description

Job Description

Our client is looking for a UX/UI Designer to help shape end-to-end customer journeys across our ecommerce experience — from first click to purchase and beyond. You'll design across the full journey, partnering closely with Product Managers, Engineering, Brand & Creative, and Site Experience to turn business goals and customer needs into clear, well-crafted design solutions.

The client is a growing, fast-moving business, and priorities here evolve as we scale. You'll be someone who can move fluidly between projects, stay focused on the customer journey as the details shift, and bring structure and clarity to your own work without needing everything mapped out in advance. Some of what you'll take on will span multiple teams or business units, so you're comfortable coordinating across stakeholders to keep things moving.

This role reports to the Senior Director, Digital Product & Experience to start with and offers real autonomy to own your work end-to-end, with support from a small, collaborative design and research team.

What you'll get to do:

• Own end-to-end UX/UI design for assigned features and product areas across ecommerce experience — from problem framing through wireframes, prototypes, and polished UI

• Partner closely with Product Managers to translate business goals and requirements into clear, user-centered design solutions

• Coordinate design work on initiatives that span multiple teams or business units, aligning stakeholders and managing dependencies to keep work moving

• Partner closely with Engineering, building Figma files that are structured for clean design-to-code handoff, and participating in sprint/agile ceremonies to stay aligned on scope and timing

• Conduct evaluative research — usability testing and validation — before final designs are handed off to Engineering

• Conduct competitive research and apply industry benchmarks (e.g., Baymard Institute) to inform design decisions

• Adapt quickly and prioritize effectively as business needs and project scope shift, without losing sight of the end-to-end customer journey

• Present design work and rationale to Product, Engineering, and other cross-functional partners

• Ensure design consistency, accessibility, and quality across desktop and mobile experiences

• Iterate on shipped work based on performance data and customer feedback

Qualifications

Who you are:

• 4-6+ years of experience in UX/UI design, ideally in an ecommerce or digital product environment

• Bachelor's degree in UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field, or equivalent experience

• Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end UX process: problem framing, wireframes, prototypes, and shipped work

• Experience designing within an established design system, with an eye for consistency and reusable patterns

• Comfortable managing multiple concurrent projects and coordinating across teams and stakeholders

• Proficiency in Figma, including prototyping and component-based design

• Demonstrated ability to present and defend design decisions to cross-functional partners

• A track record of taking on increasing scope and ownership in your work

• Self-directed and resourceful — comfortable operating with autonomy in a fast-moving, evolving environment

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
