To thrive as a User Experience Designer, you need a strong understanding of user-centered design principles, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing, typically supported by a degree in design, HCI, or a related field. Familiarity with design tools like Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, and user research methodologies is essential. These skills ensure the creation of intuitive, engaging products that meet both user goals and business objectives.

What are some common challenges User Experience Designers face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

User Experience Designers often work closely with product managers, developers, and marketing teams to deliver user-centered solutions. A common challenge is balancing user needs with business goals and technical constraints, which requires clear communication and negotiation skills. Additionally, aligning different stakeholders' perspectives and managing feedback can be complex, but strong collaboration and empathy help bridge these gaps. Building relationships and establishing shared goals early in a project can significantly improve outcomes and workflow.

Job description

RT Specialty, a division of Ryan Specialty, is a leading wholesale distributor of specialty insurance products and services. Our experienced brokers are specialized in property, casualty, professional lines, transportation and workers' compensation, providing creative solutions to retail brokerage firms. We define ourselves through our superior execution on behalf of our clients, which has established us as a leader in the industry.
Position Summary
Ryan Specialty is looking for a Senior UX Designer to join our team. Our UX Design team within the Digital Solutions group shapes user experiences across RT Specialty's ecosystem of digital products, including internal tools and client-facing platforms.
This position offers a hybrid schedule with three days in the office and two days working from home in our Chicago, IL or Buffalo, NY locations.
We are looking for a Senior UX Designer, with "full-stack" skills (UI + UX/IA + UX research) skills - strong UI skills are a must. This role is multi-faceted, requiring you to:
• Lead design efforts for a product area (e.g. internal workflow tools for policy management, or external quoting platforms) in partnership with a cross-discipline team; flex to support other areas as needed.
• Identify user needs; concept; plan; and execute pixel-perfect, development-ready deliverables for responsive web touchpoints.
• Juggle several projects and make decisions that balance quality, time, and resources.
• Collaborate closely with Engineers, Product Owners, Marketing, and Business partners to deliver outstanding experiences that improve customer satisfaction and user and business outcomes.
What will your job entail?
Responsibilities:
  • Build user experiences driven by user needs, jobs-to-be-done (JTBD), and business needs.
  • Collaborate with product managers and engineers to understand the product & requirements, improve the visual and interactive experience, and bring designs to life within technical constraints.
  • Rapidly and thoroughly produce multiple concepts and high-fidelity prototypes, knowing when to explore deeper or change direction.
  • Present design concepts to team leadership and external partners, leveraging available data and research to justify recommendations.
  • Conduct occasional research and/or partner with researchers to plan, interpret, and apply user testing insights.
  • Gather, catalog, and address UX problems in the current experience.
  • Communicate and document design direction for team members using wireframes, storyboards, process flows, sitemaps and polished final designs and prototypes.
  • Help document, optimize, and implement a design system.
  • Effectively communicate changes within the design team to assess and inform updates and maintain consistency across neighboring products or feature areas.
  • Stay current with design industry, insurance industry competition, and UX best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of experience with UX/Product Design, including the final development and execution process. Portfolios should highlight challenges you faced, how you collaborated with others, what you learned, and the user/business impact of your work.
  • Experience designing for complex domains (e.g. e-commerce, insurance, regulated industries) and large-scale software projects within an agile environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in design or tech-related field; or equivalent industry experience.
  • User-centered approach to problem solving that leverages research, analytics, and empathy combined with strong design intuition.
  • An understanding of today's common design patterns & UI best practices.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills and the ability to tailor communications to your audience.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to operate independently and prioritize, multi-task, and work under shifting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to factor in the big picture while also being able to pay attention to details.
  • Alignment with Ryan Specialty culture.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Insurance industry experience is required ***

Technical Requirements:
  • Proficient with current UX/Service Design tools (we use Figma but we can ramp you up)
  • Competence in all aspects and levels of interaction/UX design from information architecture and workflows to micro-interactions, including UI design skills.
  • Solid understanding of general development processes, technologies, and frameworks (i.e. JavaScript, presentation layer coding, etc.); coding helpful but not required in this role.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficient with Figma, experience with design systems and the insurance industry.
