What is usability in the context of design and technology?

Usability refers to how easy, efficient, and satisfying it is for users to interact with a product, system, or service. It encompasses factors like learnability, efficiency, memorability, error frequency, and user satisfaction. In design and technology, usability ensures that products meet the needs of real users and are accessible to as many people as possible. Usability testing and user feedback are crucial steps in identifying and addressing potential issues, leading to better user experiences.

How does a usability specialist typically collaborate with product designers and developers during a project?

Usability specialists work closely with product designers and developers throughout the product lifecycle. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to share user research insights, help define user requirements, and conduct usability testing on prototypes or live products. By providing actionable feedback and recommendations, usability specialists ensure that design and development teams prioritize user-centered improvements, resulting in a more intuitive and effective end product. Regular communication and collaborative problem-solving are key aspects of this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a usability specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Usability Specialist, you need a strong understanding of user-centered design principles, experience in usability testing, and typically a background in human-computer interaction, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with usability testing tools (such as UserTesting or Morae), wireframing software (like Axure or Sketch), and analytics platforms is often required. Exceptional observational skills, empathy, and the ability to clearly communicate findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders set top professionals apart. These skills are crucial for creating intuitive products that meet user needs and drive business success.

What is the difference between Usability vs User Experience Designer?

AspectUsabilityUser Experience Designer
FocusEase of use and efficiency of a productOverall user experience, including emotions and perceptions
SkillsUsability testing, interface design, human-computer interactionUser research, interaction design, visual design, prototyping
Work EnvironmentOften within UX teams, product teams, or as consultantsPart of UX or product teams, collaborating across disciplines
GoalsImprove product usability and accessibilityCreate engaging, meaningful user experiences

While usability focuses on making products easy and efficient to use, user experience designers take a broader approach, shaping the overall perception and emotional connection users have with a product. Both roles are essential in creating successful digital products, often overlapping but with distinct primary objectives.

Tasks

  • Take ownership of usability evaluations by independently planning and conducting them (formative and summative) across software and hardware, aligned with ISO 9241‑210.
  • Support internal teams as advocate for usability evaluation in the company by educating stakeholders on usability methods and best practices.
  • Translate user behavior into evidence-based findings, including: task success, errors and root causes, clearly informing product definition beyond meeting regulatory requirements.
  • Partner closely with UX designers, Product Managers, and R&D to validate concepts, prototypes and implemented solutions at the appropriate project phases.
  • Develop and lead usability testing activities and evaluate their results to guide product development.
  • Own usability metrics, standards, and frameworks (methods, templates, tooling) to ensure consistency and comparability across products and portfolios.
  • Act as the usability quality gate before release, reducing: UX defects, late-stage rework costs.
  • Identify usability risks early and provide actionable recommendations for improvement.
  • Document and communicate findings in a structured and decision-ready format.
  • Contribute to the development of usability evaluation processes and standards.
  • Explore emerging topics such as: AI-supported usability testing, evaluation of AI-driven and agent-based experiences.
Qualifications Requirements
  • Degree in Usability Engineering, Human Factors, Psychology, UX Research, or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience in usability testing, evaluation methods and user research activities.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to derive insights from user behavior.
  • Experience in translating findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Experience working with prototypes, software products, hardware interfaces, or complex technical systems.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to present findings to diverse stakeholders.
  • Fluent command of English is required.
  • Some international travel is required.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in life science, medical, or B2B environments.
  • Interest in AI-assisted usability engineering and openness to evaluating AI-driven or agent-based experiences.
  • Certifications such as CPUX or similar.
  • Familiarity with agile development processes.
What we offer
  • Work on meaningful, high-impact products: Design solutions that support scientists, diagnostics, and research worldwide — contributing to work that helps improve health, safety, and quality of life.
  • Strong UX community & modern environment, join a globally connected and international UX team in a collaborative, supportive environment built on trust, psychological safety, and open feedback — where diverse perspectives are valued and the team culture is actively shaped and lived.
  • Collaborate across disciplines, grow your expertise, and maintain a sustainable pace of work focused on quality and long‑term impact, embedded in a hybrid work model (remote & on‑site).
  • Benefits include continuous learning and development opportunities, access to conferences, and regular feedback to support your personal development and professional growth — alongside competitive compensation, benefits (e.g. pension plan), and amenities such as sports, cultural programs, and on‑site cafeteria.
